I've heard that rumor too. I also heard that Bill Gates's doormat to his house is a melted down Mac.

That wouldn't surprise me...I mean for all of XPs improvements since 3.1, it has always been a few lengths shy of where Apple has been. Now that open source has taken off and Linux has really been more widely accepted, I could see Bill with a Linux box too.

Any of you see the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley? If you haven't....rent it. If you are into the behind the scenes kind of stuff, it should be right up your alley!

I myself found it pretty interesting.

I am just very pleased to see Apple finally hitting on all 8. I mean, Steve is a visionary, but has in the past had bad business sense. In his second term in mgmt at Apple, I am glad to see how he's finally figured out how to exploit the features of what I like to consider a better mouse trap and guide the company to a place where it appears others need to once again follow.

O.K. so this is easy when you run a Mac you run a Mac. But with a Windows machine it's anybody's guess what your running I mean IBM,GATEWAY, DELL,COMPAC,TOSHIBA,etc.etc It's just plain easier to say..... I RUN A Mac plain and simple

My MOL is thinking of getting her first computer at age 66. She wants a laptop. I am thinking of trying to talk her into an Apple. I am getting sick and tired of Windoze myself. My computer has been giving me all kinds of fits these last few weeks. IE is unusable, I am using Opera now. When Opera gets cranky, I reboot to Mandrake Linux and use Mozilla. Time to do a "Format C:"

What you guys think? Can an old gal learn a Mac?

If you can persevere a PC, than a Mac will be old hat to you....plus less hassle!

What does the 'she' want to do with it? If she just wants to play around, she should get a Mac. Otherwise, she should get a real machine and run Windows or Linux.

That reminds me of a true story ...

Seymour Cray, the father of supercomputing, and founder of Cray Research, was informed that Steve Jobs purchased a Cray to help design the next Apple.

Cray thought about it for a moment and then said, "That's funny, I'm using an Apple to simulate the next Cray."

I don't know if Gates uses a Mac but the architects who designed his home used Macs.

I've used Macs on and off since 1987. I spent this past summer using nothing but an iBook (and O'Reilly's OS-X for Unix Geeks) at home. I started with a clean install of the latest Jaguar, did all the updates, and installed Safari beta and later the final release. Here's what I found:

I couldn't run the software that programs my Harley ignition or that which programs EFI bikes.

I couldn't use my Ford F250 Service Manual on CD

I couldn't use the AutoCAD DWF viewer, much less AutoCAD itself, for technical drawings

I couldn't play NASCAR Thunder

I couldn't fly MS Flight Simulator

I couldn't use the Trailer Life Campground CD

I couldn't use Delorme Street Atlas or MS Streets and Trips

I couldn't upgrade the firmware in a Garmin GPS

I couldn't download BlueChart or other MapSource CD topography to the GPS

I couldn't use the Garmin MapSource software to plot routes on the actual charts used in the GPS (I am aware of GPSy)

I had problems with the Airstream Forums web chat (on both Safari and IE)

Neither AOL IM or iChat would let me do audio chats (free Internet phone) with my Dad like AOL IM for Windows

There was no standards-based video teleconferencing (like NetMeeting) so my wife could interact with our granddaughter across the country on a PC. I couldn't attend meetings remotely with Polycom or PictureTel systems. iChat 2 was a huge disappointment, only compatible with other Macs.

In the end, we just weren't ready to give up so much to support Steve Jobs and Al Gore instead of Bill Gates.

I hear ya on the forums chat....I will say that in Panther using IE I could actually play on the chat room. Still can't in Safari.

So that explains why the chat didn't work for me--Safari. I thought maybe 56K modems just didn't cut it anymore.

I started out in 1984 on my original Mac with 300 baud. I was in hog heaven when I got a bargain to buy a 1200 baud modem for $500! Times have changed but unfortunately here in the woods Qwest hasn't seen fit to provide DSL yet and there is no cable. A bummer! Nearly 20 years online and this last year has been most painful with my new Powerbook.
