Anyone been to Egypt?

I know this is way way off topic, but: I may have an oportunity to teach in Cairo. I was wondering if anyone has been there and what their experience was.

Congratulations!!

It sounds like a great opportunity to experience one of earth's oldest countries. People were very friendly and the food was delicious.

I've been there a couple of times but only scuba diving The Red sea is truly magnificent. "Hallah's acquarium"!

Never made it to Cairo but I'm sure it's beautiful.

I had a great time there but now there are a few tensions, mainly in the resort areas frequented by tourists. Cities are ok. I believe it's safe enough to go. I would. Taking the AS? Post pics!!
Good luck!

I did a cruise down the Nile, and spent some time in Cairo and Alexandria many, many years ago. Fascinating country, and for the most part people were very friendly to us--although we rarely strayed from the tourist areas. There is definitely an anti-American, anti-Western sentiment among some/many? in Cairo (check out the security at the US Embassy there for example) and if you are traveling with family it would give me pause. I would heavily research safety and medical issues before committing them (particularly difficult on western women). I too would hesitate as my appearance and lack of language skills would scream American. If I could satisfy myself that I could live and go to work in at least reasonable safety, all things being equal, I would go in a heartbeat--it would truly be a life altering experience for you (and I mean that in a good way).

I would review information on the State Department website and contact the US Embassy in Cairo as part of my research. In the end, I hope you do it (and I will watch your AS for you while you are gone!). Good luck to you!

Mistral Blue's other half here-
I'm a teacher and have had the awesome opportunity to do some international teaching (student teaching in England, and at an American Community School in Amman, Jordan). I absolutely loved the middle east, spent a lot of time in Israel, a trip to Cairo, Syria and of course, Jordan. It was about 20 years ago though (gawsh, did I just say that!?!). Seems like yesterday. I now teach in suberbia, ancient civilizations, and my students get quite the kick out of pictures of me perched on a camel in front of the sphinx!

If it's safe...it'll be the experience of a lifetime. The good with the bad. All of it.

Good for you.
Magnificient.
Amanda
