Anybody know the difference...

Between an AMD Turion dual-core and Intel Core 2 Duo processor? Which is better all other factors the same?

Are you asking about the AMD Turion X2 "Ultra", released just a few month ago?

I don't think so. The two lap tops in question are both on sale at the local Office Depot and the only difference is that the one with the AMD has a 17' screen vs. 15.4" screen and is $25 more.

I have an Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 in a year old Dell laptop and it will put a second degree burn in your lap.

from what I understand AMD is still trying to catch up with the intel processor... I run macs and they are running Intel... A you can't get anything faster right now... They even run windows faster than a PC....

But it depends on what you are going to do with the machine... The one thing that pushes the production of faster processors is games... If you not playing them, you don't need the top of the line....

My brother works for EA sports so they always want faster processors to run better games.

IF you are doing pictures and movies you can get by with a 1.8 or 2.0 dual core or amd.. Just get more ram... 3-4 gigs this will make more of a difference than the processor in speed when running more than one program...

My wife's HP doesn't seem to get nearly as hot as my Dell. My Dell was three years old in March. Her HP will be a year old in November.

I guess I was more concerned about durability. I will be surfing, e-mail, office applications, photos, maybe I'll get around to editing some home videos, too. But I don't do games!

Years ago there was a bias against AMD and the Intel was preferred by my, then, IT pros at work. I guess I still remember those days. But now I'm told the AMD uses less power and the batteries will last longer and some even think AMD is better. All I know is I had two computers with centurion (?) processors and I swore I'd never have another one.

Yeah, they are the cheaper processor, AMD makes the equivalent of them too... My brother test them all with the games, They don't many processors out, AMD or Intel and they are running them 12-16 hours a day playing games...

They do burn out motherboards.!!!!!

Just make sure you have more than a gig or ram and I think either one will work... Just Get what you want in a laptop. Personal I would stay away from HP just because you can't upgrade the dam things easily... But like I said thats just personal.... A lot of people love em....

I had never had any experience with an HP until last fall I bought my wife an HP laptop and have been quite impressed with it. Of the two laptops I looked at tonight, the only real difference was the screen size. The Intel laptop had the smaller screen and 3 Gigs of ram and the AMD unit had the larger screen and 4 Gigs of ram. They both had 250 Gig hard drives and all the other hardware was the same. I figured for my purposes, I would never notice the difference between 3 and 4 Gigs of ram since I don't do games. The difference in processor speed is so small that I wouldn't notice the difference there either. So the big thing I would notice is the difference in screen size and durability.

Well, everybody I talked to felt the AMD would be fine for my purposes and durable enough to compete with the Intel so I opted for the larger screen and slightly faster processor and larger memory. I now have a HP Pavilion 9800 series with 17" screen and full key board with number key pad.
