Any Creepers Here?
We rode the Creeper Trail from Whitetop to Damascus, VA. last week and it was a great experience. We're planning some of next year's camping around the area so we can ride more of it next Spring.
Anyone else given this a go?

And you didn't invite ME? Next time, consider making it a rally and putting it on the events page. I am sure there are other that might be interested in tagging along.
Hope you had a good time. Where did you camp?

Hey Kevin,
We were camping in Black Mountain, NC and drove up that morning (1.75 hours). We're looking for locations near Abingdon or Wytheville areas for our next trip as we plan to explore more of the area in 2011.
Maybe some impromptu weekend get together for members interested in some mountain biking or trial riding.

Our favorite state park is Grayson Highlands State Park. Not only is the Virginia Creeper trail close by, but the hiking is great. It is unusual in the East to have high mountain balds (they are grazed by horses) so the views look more like Wyoming vistas than anywhere else in this part of the country that I have seen.

Kevin,
How is the camping around the Black Mountain area? Any NF campgrounds close by? We always spent the summers at Montreat when I was a kid in the '60s. I'd love to go back for a visit.
Also, O. Winston Link put out a book a few years ago entitled "The Last Steam Railroad in America", ISBN 0-8109-3575-9, that has fantastic B&W and color photos of the N&W "Virginia Creeper" steam trains that ran the Abington Branch in the 1950s.

Hi Bib,
We usually stay at the KOA there. Nothing fancy but that's where the family seems to migrate each time. We did tour Campfire Lodgings last month which is on the north side of Asheville. It is small but the view is incredible so we'll put it on next year's camp list.
Mountaintop Camping - Blue Ridge Parkway North Carolina
We're also looking to find some locations near Hungry Mother SP and Mount Rogers NRA. If you know of any let me know.

We are planning a trip in a couple of weeks to the Creeper, and from there looking to stay a few days near Asheville - sounds like a great area!
