Annoying phrases.

I stay at home with our four kids and run the business end of our office. When ever I go shopping with all the kids. I always here " you have your hands full". Once would be ok. But I was in JC Penny's yesterday and heard it 5 times.

It'll be a very quiet world when no one says annoying phrases, "small talk", the weather, overused idioms, etc. That may be a "good thing", while people are "racking their brains" for something original.

How exactly do you put someone's brain on the rack and stretch it? "What a mess"!

I don't subscribe to Standard American English elitism. I like irregardless. Sometimes I say it just to annoy people.

I am sure there are other sayings that are annoying. Mrs. Bauxter says that everything I say annoys her, so its hard to narrow down the root cause.

The one I used to really hate in business was, "on a daily basis", when simply "daily" would do.

But, it wouldn't have sounded like they were so busy.

These last couple years, Saints fans have been really chafing me raw with "Who dat?" Especially with all of the arguments in the past few years over who "owns" the phrase; no one properly attributes it to the old "Amos and Andy" radio program.

Elitism, as in: a college professor that would go into a full blown fit whenever he heard someone use irregardless.

My professors were happy I could sign my name on the test.

Elitism aside, "irregardless" suggests precisely the opposite of what most people mean when they abuse it. They generally mean "regardless", and if it were a word it would logically mean not-regardless. Irrespective is probably the word that confuses people.

it bugs me when someone says that someone "indicated" something. He indicated? Really? He didn't say it, he indicated it. Like a piece of litmus paper.

Or how about "this ain't my first rodeo"? Did you ever hear anyone admit that it was, indeed, their very first rodeo?
