"I don't know who you voted for . . . but"

whatever follows that is never pleasant.

and of course my pet internet peeve....

"loose being used instead of lose"

millions of dead English teachers turning over in their graves daily and the living ones figuratively tearing their collective hair out.

Hi,

"As God is my witness."

"DUCK tape." No it's DUCT tape for air conditioner ducts.

"Breaks" stop your trailers. And I hate it when something "Brakes" right after my warranty expires. Breaks versus Brakes is misused almost daily on this forum.

"I heart you."

Can't help myself...

Who is this Miss Used? Does she misuse break vs. brake?

Here is one I used to see in government correspondence often enough to make me want to barf up all my high school grammar clases.

"If you have any questions, please ask John or myself"

I used to enjoy the blank gazes I would get from the originators of these memos when I tried to explain that he was the only one who could see himself.

Often heard here in California... "Have a nice day".

Well maybe I don't want to have "a nice day"!

"Just saying..."

A couple more

Where are you at?
What on earth is wrong with "Where are you?"

He went missing.

This is just plain silly. It makes it sound like he just decided to go somewhere, in this case missing.

Perhaps they sense that you don't want to have a nice day and are attempting to help by annoying you. I know I would.

Hi, what I hear them say is: "Have a nice one." I always want to ask them back, "nice one, what?"

"How are we today?"

[I'm OK, I can't speak for you.]

"Why don't you..... ?"

[Generally a request to do something. The accurate response, then isn't actually to do the task, but to explain why one hasn't done it.]

"I thought you were very brave to speak out." Or, "I was puzzled by your response."

[Meaning, actually, you were a raging idiot, but I am toning down my insult.]

Respectually using "Dr." and his last name in addressing a M. D., while he refers to you by a diminutive of your first name.

My pet peeves are TV commercials from drug companies. After shots of thrilled seniors suddenly feeling super about life, the list of horrible potential side effects comes on, including "fatal episodes." Fatal episodes? As in, this stuff could kill you?]

The proper response to that is:

"Thank you, I've been told before that I do."
