And you think it wont happen in your town!
I just found out something that happened in our small town and I'm so upset.
We live in a small Mississippi college town Oxford Mississippi and I hate to write this because I cant believe it happened here. Last night a group of college kids were out at one of the local bars until closing time 12 midnight, the story is the left the bar and went home to have a party sometime around 3 am a group of frat boys busted the party and preceded with a fight on two other boy's one was able to get away with minor wounds, but the other boy was beat with a rifle end and steel poles he was then pulled down a flight of 16 concrete stairs and then pulled behind a truck and dumped. Thank goodness he is still alive but has a cracked skull and many broken bones.
My heart goes out to his family. Most of the kids that go here are blue bloods born with a silver spoon in there mouth and to the extreme spoiled rotten they all drive around in there sports cars and live in $350,000 condos there parents have bought them until they graduate. But we are normally a quite town and listed one of the top 20 places to retire.
What would make these kids do such a thing. I'm just in shock such a thing has happened. Please pray for the young man and his family.

It's almost impossible to respond. On one hand you begin to understand what motivates a vigilante posse, on the other you hope the law acts swiftly and surely.
I think I'll go oil my bear rifle...which hasn't been fired in 40 years...and stand it in the corner.

Sounds like something out of a Faulkner novel.

Yes the home town to Faulkner, he talked of it in most of his novels. He would just be shocked.

A sign in our little town of Moyock, NC says that many tragedys start out as fun. How people can get so off track leaves us all appalled and dismayed. I am, however, glad that this kind of behavior still upsets us. When it becomes so common place that we don't react is when we all hve to worry.

Down there you have William Faulkner.
Here, at the other end of the Mississippi River, forming an axis in the center of the country; we have a Nobel Prize winning author by the name of Sinclair Lewis.
There is a certain symetry and balance in that.
I hope it ends well.

My half-thought-through theory has always been ... outlaw alcohol, legalize marijuana and everything would be peaceful if not particularly productive ...
then again, i drink but don't smoke & still don't whup up on people ...

You would think that they would have been dodging all the tornadoes that were in the area last night. I think it does have a lot to do with parenting, but look what you see at the movies and on TV. Crude and rude are the going thing and it's definetly out of control.

Early hit that one right on the head. Hollywood is a thinktank for criminal behavior. they pass thier ideas down to the general populas at 8 to 10 bucks a pop, and these ideas are devoured like candy by the young people whose moral compasses do not know north from south.

...............Wealth imbues some with arrogance and a feeling of superiority and when mixed with alcohol leads to situations such as this . r66

Back in the 80's when I was an Architect designing a new bank near Fort Hood, Texas, the bank president told me about when he was college boy, how he and his friends used to go down to the bus depot on a Saturday evening and beat the hell out of the wino's just for fun! Sorry, but it's nothing new! It still makes me want to vomit!

I'm going to try and find out how the young man is Monday. It's so hush-hush infact we have a friend that is a police officer here and we cant get him to tell us anything. We have a music store and last weekend my husband rented the young man a PA, he play's in a local band here. My husband had remembered his name and also how nice the kid was when he returned the PA system he had rolled all the cables up very rare when we get stuff back. The other young man that was hurt a few stitches to the head and released from the hospital is the son of one of our Doctors here I do know that.

And in between, along the Mississippi, we have our Samuel Clemons, AKA Mark Twain, who also wrote so acutely about the human animal. Max and I have started to turn aside to visit Oxford several times on our trips south-my image of it is pure Faulkner, I'm sure. This situation is beyond appalling-especially since such senseless violence seems to appear over and over again in news in recent years. Yes, prayers are with him for recovery--and also with your town which must still be in shock as well. ~G

Senseless violence and mob mentality aren't anything new. Ever heard of lynchings? I'd blame this on the individuals, not on the downfall of society in general. In general I think our society is safer and more peaceful than it ever was.

Anytime you are in the Oxford area please let me know and I will be glad to show you around Falkners town. Oxford is a nice place most of the time it's still a true southern town with grace and beauty.
