All this talk about the weather lately!
Well, it's February in Canada and we are bitterly reminded how the
weather dictates what we can do outside and what we can't. It
definitely shapes our lives and defines our tough Canadian psyches.
We are a hearty, Northern people thriving in the Great White North.
Lately it has been particularly chilly in all parts of Canada.
Ontario has had terrible snowstorms where the Army has been called in
to help clear the streets. There was the "Big Ice Storm" in Quebec and
parts of Ontario that folks still go on and on about. The Maritime
provinces get their share of sea ice, hurricanes and blizzards too.
And of course, it does get to 300 degrees below zero in Alberta and
it's even colder in Winnipeg.
While we often hear of the great hardship faced by those in other
parts of the country, the trials and tribulations of West Coasters are
often overlooked. Here is a photo of the damage from the terrible
coastal storm that passed through Vancouver recently. Most people
stayed home and most schools were cancelled. It really makes you
cherish what you have, and reminds us not to take life for granted.
Warning: Following picture is quite graphic and may not be suitable
for younger viewers.

To Cold For Me.
I just don't understand how you folks manage those frosty temps and
overtuned patio furniture. I'm shivering here in La Mesa Calif.(San Diego).
Friday will be a Artic cold 75 degrees. BRRRRR.

Vancouver, while one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities on Earth, and it's relatively mild weather is not without its own set of issues! At least the snow melts eventually.

Weather bewitching recipe available, but if you have to ask how much...
you probably can't afford it.

Well, I'm getting ready to catch a flight to MN to meet with my husband and drive home with him after he finishes a job he's doing up there. I should be excited.....BUT it's 10 degrees here and this morning I have no water in the house. Guess those heat tapes don't work forever. Have a heater on the pipes now and am trying to decide if I should leave the house and hope the pipes aren't broken, just frozen. When is Spring going to be here??????

Juel, whatever you do SHUT the water off at the main valve before you leave. If they thaw while you are gone they could fill the house with water.

I can not help myself in wanting to send you guys some type of help or assistance! This type of weather related damage is all to often neglected by the media and the federal agencies which were originally set up to help in these types of disaters! I do have a protable chair lifter which runs on DC current; I could fly up this afternoon if needed with the equipment to help out. Oh the humanity of it all..........

Katrina - Schmatrina!
Maybe we should organize a group of volunteers to come out and help. Where should we send donations?

Record lows last night in Austin
We were in the mid-to low-teens last night in the city, which is very rare for mid-February in Austin. The record low at the airport had been 26 until now. It was 12 here in the Hill Country when I checked at 6am.
Problem is that many homes aren't constructed for cold with unprotected piping in the attic that tends to split and flood the house. Happened a few years ago to my daughter; the ceiling over their closet fell in, causing a terrible mess.
When I built an addition to my house, I specified a self-draining faucet and they had to special order one.
We are supposed to get much warmer weather next week for our 7-Airstream caravan to Big Bend.
