Airstream Hunting Juju

What lucky piece or action have you found effective when you are on the prowl for an Airstream?

This is what worked for me--wearing Sally Hansen Chrome nail polish on my toenails. I was looking for something way back in the bathroom cupboard one day and found a lost bottle of this polish--and it is really chrome-like and shiny.

We had been looking for a trailer for about a month and I decided to wear this polish to aid in the hunt--a little more than a week later we found our Safari and in another week had it home. I'm still wearing chrome just to be on the safe side.

In my opinion, the best thing you can have is a blind eye. Yes, blind. You have to let yourself be blind to imperfections, defects and deterioration. If you don't, and you are waiting for the perfect '59 or '68 or '86, you will never be an owner, just a "looking..." Owning a used Airstream requires some willingness to take the good with the bad. And I think that many "looking..." people out there don't understand that these were bought to go camping, be out in the elements and driven down bumpy roads. Have kids and dogs run through them covered in sand and dirt, sit out in the snow and rain during the winter months. So, the charm is: a blind eye!

I doubt my wife would let me do that.

So I will probably just carry the lucky-Airstream-finding-aluminum-horseshoe I bought from RichardT a couple of months ago on my next trip.

perhaps instead of hunting, you should set a trap for the wary airstream. then you can finish it off with a large caliber wallet!

what i mean is, post a wanted ad in your local newspapers. fall is a perfect time for finding unwanted trailers. storage and winterizing issues could motivate a seller on the fence.

Airstream Forums

This forum was my "Juju". After many months of looking I posted a thread about a very bad airstream that I traveled 900 miles to buy, but didn't. http://www.airforums.com/forum...ad.php?t=16614
I had two members make offers to me, I bought one. Besides, I think the chrome toenail thing makes me look cheap :-)

From the mouth of babes........

My daughter spotted my trailer in a used car lot. ( Crooks R Us )
She knew I was looking for a used Scamp.
( I had always dreamed of a Bambi, but knew that I couldn't afford it )
They took me to see the trailer and I went back to the computer to research it. I found you guys. But the bottom line is that my daughter is my good luck charm!!!!!

Look in the deepest, dankest, darkest most unlikely place you would ever think to find an Airstream. That is where I have found 3 of the last 4 Airstreams I have located.

Kid Sister JuJu

Whenever I visit my sister in Ohio, we always spot Airstreams, Argosy's, Avions and yes, even a rare Squarestream!

She's got amazing peripheral vision - and we drive out in the country quite a lot. Ask me nicely and I'll give her YOUR name and number if you need an "Airstream dowsing stick" in N.E. Ohio or western PA.

I found mine on RVTraderonline, just about 10 miles away. If you are looking for anything, be it a house, car, truck, Airstream, I find just driving around works great. Found a lot of houses for sale, for friends this way.

It's so unfair that there are a zillion Airstreams in W.Pa and Ohio--and none in N.NJ--and believe me, I've been looking for years--it was finally spotting a Bambi on the side of the road for sale near me that set me off on a serious hunt again.

There was a recent poll here that bears me out--the lowest or almost lowest % were bought in Mid Atlantic states.

Mohammed realized, "the mountain will not come to Mohammed, so Mohammed must go to the mountain." I live in Virginia and you're right - Airstreams are few and far between - heck we only have ONE dealership and that one has only carried Airstreams for a few years.

So... get a decent tow vehicle and go to the happy hunting grounds - Ohio and Illinois. Get off the main roads, drive slowly and LOOK! Ask at every gas station and local bar or restaurant. Stop in every trailer park, RV park or lakeside or fishing camp. They are thick upon the ground.

I think I've succumbed to A/S addiction. On my next trip north I'm going to look for an Argosy to restore, just for a hobby.
