Reward for an afternoon spent working on the Airstream. Yeah, that's it, a reward for work.

Mine is vintage 1988, the year I graduated college (yeah, I'm a late bloomer). Susan got it for me as a graduation present (yeah, we're old and have been married since dirt was beginning to form). We were stationed in Hawaii at the time, she ordered from the PX and had it delivered to the next door nieghbor so I wouldn't find out about about it. She almost had a heart attack when the package came from Rolex in Switzerland.

Couple years ago it stopped working. Of course, my first thought was, crap this is going to be expensive. I wear this watch 24/7 since new. Great timepiece. When I took it into the shop for repair the guy took one look at me--in my work clothes and my work truck parked in front of his shop--and asked, is this a real Rolex? Sure, sure, I told him. Open it up, you'll see. There are two red gears inside the watch that immediately ID it as genuine. He was so shocked that he brought it back out and escorted me to the backroom to have look inside the housing. Millions of dollars of jewelry back there. Bottom line is that he kept it for about 2 months while he located a new/used part on the internet to put things back to normal. Total price for the repair? $280. I was floored.

All three of my Sons-in-law have asked that I leave it to them in my will. Maybe I'll leave to the first born Grandson. We have three daughters and four grandaughters....no boys yet. How'ed that happen?

Semper Fi. Us ground guys would be in Deep Kimchi without you fly-boys.

Mine is in the bottom of a lake. Gunwale stripped it off my hand while I was going over the side. Tudor Submariner. You can tell the knock offs at a glance because the sweep second hand moves in steps one per second whereas the real ones have what seems like continuous motion, actually 8 steps per second.

Those dang "gunnels" seem to snag anything important. Here's to hoping going over the side was your choice and not due to an emergency situation. Can you retrieve it? Mine has actually gone up in value about 500% since new, at least according to the jeweler that repaired and cleaned it.

WOW Jim, you indeed got a deal. Send them to ROLEX for repairs, yikers! They are certified but dang they are expensive. Have had mine cleaned twice but still in primo condition since 1990.

It's good to have a experienced watchmaker on call if you love the mechanical's

I got a vintage DateJust from Jewelers On Time in Newport Beach CA,
Vanessa did the Service, she is VERY good.

The Factories do a good job, but arn't cheap. Rolex won't work on a watch unless you agree to replace all non Rolex parts. You'll pay $600-$800 but it is done right.

Now that was damn cool. If I tried that, there'd be too many left-over parts for stuff to ever work right again. Did ya notice the red gears in the video? Mine doesn't have the gold one, however.

Who needs a watch? Now that I'm retired, I'm on Southern Savings Time, where all the precision timekeeping you ever need is "now, later, this morning, this afternoon, tonight, tomorrow, next week, someday."

Fun facts to know and tell…
Clock time (as in "12 o'clock") came about in the 14th century. Before that, the day was divided into twelve hours from sunup to sundown, and the night was also twelve hours, from sundown to sunup, regardless of when sunup and sundown actually occurred. The hours were rung by bells, with the hours determined by using a pocket astrolabe to measure the angle of the sun in the sky, with each hour corresponding to 15° degrees of the sun's or a star's movement across the sky— Geoffrey Chaucer (of "Canterbury Tales" fame) once wrote instructions for using a pocket astrolabe to tell the hours of the day or night.

When clocks were invented, it became important to make a distinction between hours "of the clock" and hours "of the bells." The only time they ever agreed was at high noon and midnight.

That settles it. I gotta get a Hamilton---an original, not one of those cheap knock-offs floating around the internet. I'm not a collector, but those things are just dang cool.

Jim,

If your serious talk to Todd at Military Watch.
You may not be able to find the USMC dial but I've gotten several Elgin and Bulova A-11's from him. First rate seller.

Hamilton USMC, Hamilton Navy 1942,R88-W-800, Bulova 1943 A-11, Elgin 1944 A-11

Give him a heads up from me, he'll do a good deal.
