It shows that our pets are intelligent, and mourn as well.

Yes, they do. Deb's cat, Romeo has been roaming the house, calling out, no doubt, looking for him, as well. They don't understand....all they know is he was here and now they can't find him. It's a shame we can't explain it to them.

I'm busy this week, gathering things from my lists, getting ready to start packing everything in "Goliath". The stacks of items are growing. I hope it all fits. My plan is to have a fully functioning kitchen, (small scale), as well as all things needed for any trip, with exception of fresh food for fridge/freezer and fresh clothing bag. I just pulled out all my fishing gear that I bought last season, none used as yet. Hope to try it out on this trip.....boondocking school. Bringing "Goliath" home tomorrow from storage lot.

Most people start out with an excess of things they "need" to take along. Do a post mortem after every trip and downgrade items not used to "might need". If you see a trend after a few trips then downgrade again to "don't need, leave behind". Although our backpack is bigger the temptation to fill it should be avoided.

Thanks, Gearheart. No matter my mode of travel, I always overpack...that just seems to happen....sort of like....I need this, got to have that, I probably will need so and so, so I better take it, etc. you are right though, after each trip...I will certainly pare things down...maybe even before I go, after all, there is only a certain amt of space in "Goliath"!
LOL,

I did some digging around and found a book I ordered last summer. It is called
"MOUNTAIN DIRECTORY WEST" for truckers, RV, & MOTORHOME Drivers.
Locations, descriptions of over 400 mountain passes & steep grades in 11 western states.
It was written by a trucker to provide critical information about mtn passes, steep grades, curves, switchbacks, location of runaway truck ramps, lack of guard rails with steep drop offs, etc.

Contains excellent info to all travelers, especially, RV, Towing trailers or driving motor homes. It lists degree of ascent and descent grades, I.e., 6% grade on Monarch pass., also specific to direction of travel...east or west, etc.

I am so glad I located it, as it provides the info I really needed. I don't like surprises...especially those one may encounter when traveling in an unfamiliar region. Now, I do not feel so intimidated about my drive on trip this week. Sigh of relief!!

I have been "off the grid" at boondocking for greenhorns since Sunday...returned home early on Wednesday....for two reason:
1. Altitude is higher than my body wants to deal with for a prolonged period. I do ok around 6-7000 elevation, but, the ~ 9500 altitude was a bit much, even with O2 on.

2. Coach batteries would not hold a charge even overnight (with everything off, except for fridge). Ray was nice enough to charge up my generator from his generator, so I could charge my batteries.....3 days in a row. Tuesday night, I was up most of the night...keeping the batteries charged using Maxum gen.....over, and over and over! It was obvious these "new batteries" we're not capable of holding a charge!

3. I attempted to follow Ray Wednesday on a side trip to Crested Butte, but, could not keep up with his speed, lost sight of the group when other sightseerers' autos and 3 groups of bicyclists slowed me down....so, since I was already in Gunnison, I decided to throw in the towel, and just head home.

Such a nice group of folks! Wish I could have had more time, but, a wise person knows when to let go....so I did!

Drove Monarch pass both ways...not too bad, though I did encounter a heck of a rainstorm going over first 1/2 of trip. Just glad it wasn't snow. (So, I can mark one more high altitude pass off my list!

Arrived home Wednesday evening......and have a nice surprise....all my roses, irises, and peonies are putting on quite the show! My neighbors came over yesterday for free bouquets of their favorites. (Our front yard is very popular in the neighborhood when in full bloom)! So, that sort of softened the blow for needing to return early from my trip.

As I said before...nothing ventured...nothing gained. And I did learn of my limitations. I can drive over high mountains ....just should not linger long and camp there a few days. No worry, there are many locations for me to travel that are good for me!

Next big trip...to Jackson Hole, Wy....then on to Fort Stevens SP in Oregon. I may try to go a bit earlier and spend some time in Grand Tetons first.

Called Airstream yesterday, they will take care of me and battery problem. Gretchen asked for them to check a fuse for the gen/battery system first, then, replace the 2 Lifeline AGM batteries which appear to be the problem. So, hopefully, I can get it taken care of and get back on the road. I take it in Wednesday, and asked them to get right on it, so I don't have to cancel any more trips!

I'm taking it to Windish, the only dealer in this region, so wish me luck! I wish Mercedez-Benz dealer could handle the problem, but, they can't....so windish it is.

Have another trip planned to Chatfield SP on 27th, so hope to have it back in time.

Mikki did well on boondocking trip, after a bit of coaching, socialized well with "the big dogs" except for one. Ray and Nancy's dingo and blue, as well as Jo's Alpha...all got along well. Mikki warmed up to Nancy and Jo, even let them pet her a bit. Mikki is so used to thinking she is the top dog at home, I hoped she would be OK in the group and she was.

It was nice to finally put faces and names with the forum handles. Hope to meet up with some more on future trips....just not higher elevations for more than a day or two. I was a bit nervous re: traveling solo....but, I need not worry. As long as "Goliath" runs, I can get to where I need to be. If I see, as I did on this most recent trip, that I'm not up to a particular situation....no problem....put "Goliath" in gear and go where I like! If I think I'm getting to be a PIA, I can just go! I'm independent....hate to ask for help, but, find it necessary sometimes...though, for me to ask for help, is like pulling my own teeth, but, I am learning! No one is an island....not even me.

Bummer, Evelyn.

What's the deal with the new batteries in Interstates, anyway.

We read over and over again here about batteries going bad so quickly.

That should just not be the case with a brand new rig.

Glad you got to meet those good folks, and had a few days out in the wilds....and now you know some limitations.

I remember our first trip to the Tetons, hiking up an elevation...

Yep, Maggie...tried it, now I know...must have "good batteries" to boondocking, don't have too much caffeine in high altitudes.....I get too chatty! If 02 doesn't allow any activity....I should probably be somewhere else! Lessons learned!

No problem....lots of altitudes I can visit.....Wy, west coast, etc. See you in August!

I have decided to extend my trip from Oregon. Since I've never been inside Grand Teton NP, I am going there for 4 days after I leave Oregon, on my way home. I've made reservations for 4 nights in Coulter Bay RV PARK....full hookups. That should tie up the end of my first month long trip nicely. Another first for me.

This is a year of many firsts for me. I don't know if I can handle something unless I give it a try. Nothing ventured.....nothing gained.

Wow, just watching the news....heat related fires southwest. I sure hope they don't hit our NW region. I've had to cancel a NW and coastal trip 2 years, due to forest fires. Say our prayers and hope for fair weather and fair skies....and no forest fires.

I have just returned from dumping my waste tanks.......hot weather and full waste tanks.....PEEEEYEEW! The honey truck came to empty the dump station as I was leaving. I tried holding my breath....could not hold it long enough! BARF!

The owner of my RV storage lot has secured an electric space for me...hard to come by in these parts. More expensive, but, glad to have it. Once fall comes, it's like looking for gold deposits...that rare here in our area. It's easier in and out as well. Nice owner gives me a 10% military discount. It helps.
