I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

It's dark outside right now.

Maggie you are an inspiration. I have just spent probably an hour reading everyones replies. Beautiful. And this is more motivation to leave the rat race and spend every moment with my loved ones. Take care and be well. Wishing you the best.

Maggie, that campground (minus the hosts, that is) sounds wonderful! I realize a part of the name is "Indiana", but is it actually in Illinois?

Thanks,

Deb

It is in Indiana, between Gary and Michigan City, on Lake Michigan.

The campground is not on the shore, but close, and beautiful, nonetheless.

Also, as a NP, 50% off with senior pass.

It is a no reservations site, does have a dump station, showers and flush toilets.

No hookups, but lots of shade. I'll try to get some pictures later, but the Ipad may invert them.

Yay for resourcefulness. Sounds as if those camp hosts are already stressing about the last, long weekend camping onslaught of the season.

I do have a DO question. What do you believe would be a good size for the beginner? I would especially like to try to bake bread and plan to participate in the instructional session at Alumalina next month.

I hope you and Miss Lily have a wonderful, relaxing weekend.

I believe our "big" DO is 12", and of regular depth. This is a good size for most things, IMO.

If you want to bake bread, and are buying your first DO, though, I believe I would get the deep version, as the extra height will eliminate some of the shenanigans needed to keep the top from burning.

I would also get one of the soft carry bags, as it just makes things easier and cleaner, and you can stow liners and things in the bag with the DO.

Is that the one with the legs? Also, is it better to get one that is already seasoned?

I am on the Lodge webpage. Camp Dutch Oven is the correct terminology for the ones that have legs. I take it these are the best for charcoal, campfire cooking, correct?

Yes, legs, and the inverted lid for which to hold hot coals.

I think the pre-seasoned are worth the money, myself. Might order one directly from Lodge, as some from other places actually seem to be Lodge "seconds".

Had a bit of wildlife drama here this morning. A young raccoon was wandering about our campsite....I suspect it smelled the dog food inside. A Ranger was trying to shoo it off, it would not leave. Seemed sick, also habituated to humans. I wonder if it had been a pet, then was turned loose.

Animal control here "will not come out for raccoons". Even this one, in a campground, and a clear potential threat to humans it was not afraid of and actually seemed to be seeking out.

With much effort on the part of said young Rangers, and a bit of unsolicited assistance from moi, they got it into a cardboard box, where it promptly had seizures. We duct-taped the box shut, then they took it off and shot it, poor thing. A day in the life of a Forest Ranger.

It is so heavily forested here that I need light inside to do almost anything. Is also now raining, so it is truly dark. I have cleaned and re-organized a few cabinets, which needed to be done. I intend to do them all while I am here, a bit every day.

I find remnants of Doug everywhere....matchbooks from places we've been, receipts he's kept, notes on small pieces of paper, etc. I had to-do lists, Doug liked small slips of paper.

Am just leaving them where I find them. He belongs here.

Yes.

The picture will show an inverted, rather than domed, lid, also the legs.

Thanks, Maggie. I did as you suggested and ordered the 12" x 5" camp oven and case. Looking forward to baking bread with you.

Sad about the raccoon, but it sounds as is it might have been rabid.

Doug will be with you until you leave this life, just as my dad stayed for my mom. To me, that is very reassuring.

It's a very comforting thought, that Doug is here with me.

I've been trying to be a big girl, and let go, but if he wants to hang around I am certainly not going to quarrel with it.

I'm going to ask Gary to re-post on the rally thread the DO information I had put together for last winter. This bread gets started the day before.

Looking forward to meeting you, Pagey.

Quite the contrary. Maggie always seems so even-keeled and pleasant!

Forgive me Maggie, I just couldn't help myself! Hopefully worth a smile!
