Ah yes, but even if you miss the turn, you can always pull yourself out and try again. I've missed many turns and have been fortunate enough to pull myself out and given myself another try. Never give up. Help yourself and others will then help you. It's just the way it is and should be! Peace, jim

Gathering, shopping, packing and organizing for the weekend of camping with the grands.

Lily and I are going to head out tomorrow, get set up, take a bike ride, enjoy the campground and being out before the others arrive Friday afternoon. I am so ready to go.

Am realizing, particularly as I'm making myself focus on letting go rather than hanging on, that I'm going to need to seriously restructure my life. I have adjusted my daily routine, of course, but the immediate tasks of widowhood are giving way to boredom. Another of those predictable outcomes of time passing and reality setting in, I think.

I can only clean, tidy, read, crochet, watch tv, etc., just so much. Am a bit more inspired to cook since my time with friends in MN, but that is limited for one person......but for Sundays when there is someone here to eat besides me.

By this date, Doug and I would have been home for a grands' birthday late July, then long since on the road to somewhere. What a time we had. If we weren't driving, we would be enjoying and exploring some newfound or much-loved place, and the activities of traveling, caring for him, and my own hobbies would pretty much fill my days. I am so grateful for those 6 1/2 years roaming around together....but they are over.

The joy and freedom of traveling and being out in the Interstate calls to me mightily, tho, and I do intend to go for as long as I can. Might try some workcamping at some point.

Ahhh, well....a path will open if I am open to seeing it, right?

There is poor and intermittent signal where we will be for the weekend, so I will be Forums-less after today until Sunday.

Have a good weekend.

Maggie

Maggie,
First, our sincerest thoughts on the loss of your husband...though he is right beside you, with your coffee, or muffin, or wine!
Second, thank you so very much for your wonderful quotes, they help to remind us to make the world a better place and to appreciate who we have. Lately I have been trying to rise above some negativity and be a happier and more thankful person. Not having met my husband until later in life, I can only hope we have years as full of love as you and Doug did.
And lastly, I hope that once we finish our over two year restoration of our 1980 International, we have the opportunity to meet you at a rally or gathering.
Oh, one question, though - you mentioned taking DO bread out of the oven. What is DO bread?
Most sincerely ~ Jenn

Thank you, Jenn.

Doug and I were a second marriage for both of us, and didn't meet until we were 37. Late can still be very, very good. He would say that sometimes you have to marry wrong before you can marry right.

We didn't have a perfect marriage or a perfect relationship, but were a good balance for each other, loved each other very much and were committed to the marriage. That's the key. He was a complicated man, and would say I was a complicated woman. So very fortunate to have found each other, and to have had those retirement years together, vagabonding around the country.

One can't always focus on the positives, but I do think life is better when we pull ourselves out of whatever is dragging us down and articulate what is good in our lives. Just acknowledging those things makes a huge difference, in my experience.

DO bread is a single loaf of bread, baked in a Dutch Oven. It is an easy, Artisan bread, that we were perfecting baking outside, with charcoal, for the Alumalina rally we were headed to last March. It is the easiest, most delicious bread. It is easier at home, in a traditional oven, but so fun to turn out delicious, homemade bread when you are out and about in your travel whatever.

The Alumalina, March 2014, thread, page 53, posts 716-719, has the DO bread recipe and instructions for charcoal and traditional oven as a pdf file. I only know that so clearly because someone else had emailed me about it and located the posts.

Good luck to you, and will look for you at a rally one of these days.

Maggie - Thank you so much.

Your relationship was very much like ours! Robb is a sole practioner in a small chiropractic clinic and I work with a local Childrens hospital and we look forward to when we can retire and travel with the dogs and Betty (our 31' International).

Thank you so much for the info on the DO bread - I will definitely look it up. I will let you know how my efforts at it turn out.

Many Blessings,
Jenn

Evenings on the IPad:

Memory can only tell us what we were,
in the company of those we loved;
it cannot help us find what each of us, alone, must now become.
Yet no person is really alone;
those who live no more echo still within our thoughts and words,
and what they did has become woven into what we are.

Well, we had a near-perfect camping weekend.

The grands rode their bikes, rode their bikes, and rode their bikes some more, all over this huge area, where our three set-ups were the only ones in the entire campground. $8 per night, for up to 3 tents on a site. Pit toilets and showers. Can't beat that.

I hauled the hitch-hauler, heaped full of wood, going 50 mph on the backroads, which we burned almost completely up. My son taught his boys how to flint-start and build fires, we cooked our meals in the fire pit and made s'mores each evening. Great fun.

I finished the t-shirt rug on Saturday.

Temps were moderate and mosquitoes at a minimum. Lily found herself a large pile of duck poop to roll in, and had to have a last-minute scrub yesterday morning under the pump. Always carry dog shampoo.

All I wanted, once the Interstate was unloaded, was a soak in the tub, to scrub my feet, and my jammies........in the AC. Lily and I were down for the night at an obscenely early hour.

The first campout with the grands, minus Doug. We missed him and talked about him, and it was a good time. I like to think his spirit was there, beer in hand, standing around the fire, and that he peeked in on his beloved grandchildren once they had crashed for the night.

It is so true that situations improve by doing. I am a firm believer in getting up each day, doing your part, and what you need to do, in your corner of the world, trusting that whatever you are going through will shake itself out. It always does.

Through is the only way out, as they say, and confidence comes by doing.

Heading south and east in a couple of weeks, God willin' and the creek don't rise, as they say. I can do this.

Hope y'all had a great weekend.

Maggie

Glad you and the grandkids had a good time. You're right--keep going.

Thanks for posting the laundry detergent recipe a while back. I went back and printed the recipe yesterday, and then mixed up my first batch. Found out our daughter and her family have been using the same thing for about a year. She really likes it.

The completed rug.

For a first effort, I think it came out pretty well, and couldn't have been easier to make.
