A hairy question, for men.
Hi, as old as I am, I still have a lot of hair on top of my head. My hair is still naturally brown too. I used to use hair spray to hold my hair neatly in place and this worked fine until we go camping. Then it seems that the non-scented hair spray attracted flying insects. This is not good. So I tried using Brylcreem, "A little dab will do you." Well this also attracted flying insects. So now I use nothing, but my hair flies around and looks messy and I don't like messy.
Now, due to "Basil Cell Carcinoma," I have become a hat person. So my question for you is, what can a guy use to hold his hair, neatly in place, without attracting flying insects? Maybe this question is too late because I have become a hat person to shade my face.

A small dab of neem oil, perhaps?
ETA: NOT the insecticide sort, the sort rated for cosmetic use.

Be well my friend,

I use this and very little scent, not greasy, not shinny, and your head doesn't feel like your wearing a helmet.

I use a #2 blade on the sides and a #4 blade on the top. The longest hair on my head is 1/2". I have found this hairdo to be the epitome of neat with no need for chemicals to hold it in place.
I do not have a flying insect problem!!

I agree with you Bill, I don't have a big head of hair, I think I've had a receding hairline since I was in my teens, but I was finding that what I do have was getting to be a real pain to keep looking presentable as I do a lot of motorcycle riding.
So a few years ago I adopted your method and I don't think I would go back to a longer hair style - this is so much easier, and I find, more comfortable! And I'm no fashion plate anyway, so appearance doesn't really enter into the equation for me!

Bob,
It's not the hair "placement" I'm worried about....

As my hair grows ever thinner and the bald spot grows larger, I've found that the idea of actually assisting in the premature removal of said hair grows more and more repugnant. As a result, I've grown it long enough for a pony tail, and a simple application of a small "scrunchy" leaves my hair reasonably neat and chemical free. The beard, however, has a mind of its own and that is attacked with a hedge trimmer or similar when the desire to look neat(er) exceeds the need to keep warm in the winter.

For any hat people out there. Do not wear ordinary caps outside as for some reason the sunlight concentrates where the cap stops around your ears and for head. Leaving you with dry patches that do not seem to want to go away. Many doctors will tell you this is the worst item you can put on your head. But anything with a brim is alright.

Goodness! Have i stumbled into a mens' grooming advice page?
Ageing hair? Just keep it short; a #4 maximum, and all will be well.

Having been a ball cap person for awhile, I love all sorts of hats. I commute on public transit so some kind of hat almost mandatory. I have a straw fedora for Texas summer, a felt fedora for fall, ball caps for windy spring watch cap for winter. Im 60 so I've now gone to the 4 blade all over as well. For camping its either a ball cap or my 20 year old EB waterproof canvas fedora. And always remember the sunscreen

No, no, no---no hairspray or goo, guys!
Cut it short and go natural, wear the hat to protect your head when needed and put a little sunblock on your ears to protect them.

A hairy question, for men.
Two possibilities that I am aware of would be a quality "leave-in" hair conditioner following shampooing or an oil like Vitalis. I have utilized each, but find that the leave-in conditioner tends to assist in keeping hair in-place. Most of the time, I have my hair cut at Cost-Cutters and purchase the leave-in conditioner recommended by my stylist. With either method, I have never had any problems with insects being attracted to my hair styling products.

The answer has always been easy. Air-conditioning is excellent, maintenance is zilch between cheap haircuts 10-12 days apart, and you're supporting our troops wherever you go . . remember all the WWII vets who never wore anything else again?
No other haircut is as hat-friendly, either. I do a short flat-top instead of this buzz. No.1 on the sides, and a landing strip atop. Maybe you'll have some interesting scars or indentations to story-tell with.
You can get you a MARPAT, Field Cover, Desert. I got one for Xmas awhile back from the resident Marine. Great rain hat.

If I go less than a #4 I tend to look like an escaped prisoner. It's the dark hair and pale (oh so pale) English skin.
I'm not, btw.
An escaped prisoner, that is.
