My favorite is the sign that says, "Uncle Bert is at it again, have gone for help. No matter what, don't go inside!"

I saw a bumper sticker today that said "I'm not lost, I'm wandering".
Set the cruise control a bit higher today, and just trucked across Nebraska. If there's anyplace to do that, it's these flatlands.
Back in the Central Time Zone, we are settled into a pretty city park campground in Papillion, NE, just a bit south of Omaha.
Television signal, so I will get to watch the news tonight. I missed the debate.
Tomorrow...a Blue Beacon tubby for the Interstate, as the windshield and every single forward facing part are covered with bug bits from the past week.
And, there is a BB right on my way to pick up 92 into Iowa.
Kismet, Doug would say.

Decided to forego Blue Beacon this morning for the one at home... after I have driven the dusty Iowa roads to/from Grace Hill...tho did do a wash of my windshield, however, as it was getting to the point where vision was becoming impaired.
Had a lovely and uneventful drive thru Western Iowa today...trees have not yet started to turn, but harvest is in full swing. Soybeans and corn in these here parts, as in Illinois.
America's Heartland ...or flyover country...depending on your perspective.
Doug was born and raised in Washington County, Iowa, and never ran out of stories to tell, and fond memories to share, of the people and places here that he loved and held near and dear to his heart.
One of the places he held near and dear was the Grace Hill Moravian Church, on the National Register of Historic Places, and whose nearby cemetery holds his grave, next to his Dad, who is next to his Mom.
His Dad died suddenly the day before Doug's 4th birthday, by which time they had already moved to town, but Doug remembered clearly attending that church with both of his parents...and drawing water from the well out back with a bucket and a rope, said bucket which then sat by the back door of the church with a dipper in it...for communal drinking.
The well is boarded up, but the church still stands, and Doug's funeral was held there. It's what he wanted, and where he wanted to be buried...I'm glad we'd had that conversation.
The rose bush I planted at Doug's grave the first Memorial Day has died ....I will replace it next spring, perhaps with something bigger and more hardy, better able to withstand the severe Iowa winters.
As it is chilly and windy, passed on my usual overnight in the cemetery for the very nice county park here...electricity and showers.
Straight home tomorrow, as the kids/grand in Iowa City have other company this week, so I'm going to bring my son's three and come back in a couple of weeks.
We will spend the night in a motel, parents will get a night off, and they will have a cousin visit. Good, all the way around.
Grandma's sweet babies.
Maggie

Washington County...
Great Maggie, I was born in Sioux Falls, SD, same sort of people as in Southeastern Iowa. Just darn good folks!
I am departing for home this afternoon, but will be going south to KC before turning left and heading over towards Charleston, WV, where a right turn takes me down I-77 and home in Greensboro.
Drive safe!

If you feel like taking a swing into Central Illinois, let me know, Tommie...as we are home.
Essentials are out of the Interstate, going to swing by to see the grands after awhile, and spend the next couple of days settling back in before I tackle the yard....which has been mowed, but otherwise neglected, these past 9 weeks or so.
All the beds need attending to, and my trellissed vines in the front badly need trimmed.
On the agenda for this evening....a long soak in a hot bath.

We are not driving anywhere today.
Left Gail and Bay City, Oregon, two weeks ago today, and have stayed one place for two nights since then...otherwise, driving every day, trekking toward home.
On the upside, good to not have to be home in just a few days, driving all those miles under time pressure.
It's time to be still, tho, and I'm going to do it.
Driving through Iowa, memories and images pop up in my mind as I drive....memories of Doug's stories, his hometown, family and lifetime friends, then his kids/grands at varying ages, where they lived, things we did with them.
It is an almost surreal experience, being there without him...instead of by my side, he is one of the images and memories that flood my mind as I drive those familiar roads, and visit and tend to his grave.
Then the Illinois backroads on my final stretch home, different images and memories fill my head...where Doug lived when we first met, towns around there that he visited for work, and referred to so often in our nightly phone calls, that they became part of my memories... then into the areas I last worked before retirement.
Kids, parents, families, extended families, foster parents, court houses, police stations, hospitals....memories and images of a different type fill my head, of who lived where, who got it together and who didn't...dead of night visits to ER's, sheriff's departments and police stations...of one particular frigid and snowy night following a snowplow on 74 West to an emergency response, after a murder-suicide took the parents of 3 small children just before Christmas.
The good, the bad, and the ugly, the children and families and people we dealt with...and the absolutely corrupt and abysmal political system within which we tried to do our jobs... it all surfaced anew, and came home with me in my head.
It's still there.
Some kids we saved from their parents, others from the system, we often said.
Do the very best you can, with what is in front of you at that moment, as that moment may be all you have. Above all, do the right..thing....that's what guided me, the mantra in my head every day.
I think it was Mother Theresa who said "it is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can do only a little...do what you can."
I believe that, and held tight to it during some very dark times. Indeed, it's often all you can really do.
I also believe in doing everything you can to shine a light on people, entities and events that need to be exposed and in the light...as just when you think no one may be listening or paying attention...they are.
Do what you can. A good thing.
Maggie

Very good, Maggie. Made me think of that old song: "going to take a sentimental journey". I think we all take one of those trips at one time or another.

Hi Gail!
Doing laundry, going thru mail...mostly junk, but found some money in there.
Scheduling chimney and furnace cleaning...
It's still raining here, but hope to get the interstate cleaned later today.
Good to be home.

Welcome home, both of you. It was great meeting Lily and you of course and thanks for stopping by Spearfish on your journey.
It was Mother Theresa, if memory serves me right.
Enjoy your time at home, then get back out there again. "Keep running until the sand runs out".

Thanks, everyone. ''Tis good to be home.
It rained all day yesterday, so I got laundry done and unpacking taken care of.
I never left the house, but to the Interstate.

Glad you are home safe. I won't be able to make it to Moraine View as I have company coming that weekend. Bummer. Maybe next year.
