Hand crafted is by its very nature extravagant these days. Pressed sawdust that is guaranteed to be trash in less than 10 years is the norm now.

Over 100 years old, this furniture is....my Danish Dida from Long Island did a pretty darned good job, and made them to last.

When you turn around these two pieces he made, the tops were obviously something else once upon a time...perhaps from a bed, as there is hand carved vine with leaves along their entire width.

I always remember these grandparents as being very old, and they both had died long before this furniture became mine and I saw what was on the back of it. I don't know that anyone knew the story of where that oak came from.

There is a picture of my sister and I as pre-schoolers, dressed in our finery, with Nana and Dida at their 50th wedding anniversary. I remember them as good, kind people, tho I saw them less than a dozen times, once a year or so.

Nana made currant jelly from the bush in her back yard. Dida smoked a pipe, and gave us dollar bills from his wallet...which rested next to his tobacco pouch and so always smelled like pipe tobacco.

Whenever I smell a pipe, I think of him.

Good morning, Hittenstiehl.

Good to hear from you. Was hoping you would jump onto the Wyoming 2016 event......maybe that is too far for you.

Good morning Maggie I'm watching it closely. Not to far and so beautiful. Still doing the balancing act of work w/vacation and out of state family visits.

Our streams may not be in shape for such a journey yet as they are very nice aluminum tents But paying attention to your planning.

Thanks for thinking of us.

Well, I recall more than one rally where folks came in an Airstream shell, and basically camped in it.

Keep it in mind, as I would love to meet you.

Have had a busy couple of days, it seems, with much more running than usual. I am very spoiled, having long since adjusted to the less hectic pace of retirement life. When I have a busy run of days, I feel a bit put upon.

My very nice new insurance agent tried to sell me long term care insurance today. I looked at this at the urging of my kids after Doug died, and I simply can't afford it.

A ridiculous amount of money each month, and the premiums just increase as you get older. Quality of life would take a hit, and I don't live extravagantly now.

It is cool and crisp outside, leaves are falling and fall is coming in fast. I love it.

Nothing really going on here, just checking in.

Wood box on the hearth has been cleaned out, and filled heaping full with wood from the garage....left from what was brought in last winter. Always before a Doug chore....look at me, honey, three bags full hauled in....haven't I gotten strong?

Did the inside bedroom windows and sills this morning, while chugging thru the Friday house cleaning. They were overdue.

The sun is now shining thru their sparkling clean surfaces. I like clean. It makes me happy.

The biggest pumpkin I have ever had is sitting on my front porch, to be carved tomorrow in anticipation of the grands and the handful of neighbor kids who will be by for treats. Seriously, it would fill a half bushel basket.

The guy at the store went to the back to get this one for me, as the few left in the bin were pretty raggedy looking. All one price, I guess he figured the biggest he could find was the thing to do.

About 20, he came out with it on his shoulder and set it in my cart. My first thought was...I hope I can lift that into the car....but I wasn't going to send him back for another.

I could lift it from the cart...and did...also carried it from the car to the front porch without dropping it. Doing almost all of the carrying and heavy lifting myself has been good for my muscle mass.

Tomorrow....going to carve it, and I think right there on the porch. Too much pumpkin to try to get inside.

Have made plane reservations to visit my daughter and her sweet hubby in Brooklyn in early December, also am going to spend a couple of nights with friends in NJ on my way in.

Will be good to see them all.

Hi Lili, and Happy Halloween to you!

An adorable card you have created there.

I am going to post a picture of mine, once it is carved and lit up.....tho I think the rain is going to require my bringing it inside to carve, lest I become a wet and yucky mess doing it on my front porch.

It is going to be a rainy and chilly eve for trick or treaters, but I will have a fire going in the woodstove when the grands get here....they will like that, and will settle themselves on the hearth to dump and look through and munch on their booty....Grandma is always the last stop.

Had thought I might trim shrubs today, but instead shall busy myself inside.

On cold and rainy days....it is nice to have a fire.

Also, a great place to dry your shoes.
