Taking my grands out for breakfast here in a bit, then final travel preparations before we start to head toward NOLA in the morning.

Going to take the interstates to Memphis, then the scenic route the rest of the way down.

I’m looking forward to a change in scenery and milder weather, and Lily, watching me gathering up her dog food, treats, etc., is delighted to know she will be going with. Booger dog.

Next posting from the French Quarter.

Thanks, Al.

We are not yet in the French Quarter...

After almost 8 hours on the road yesterday, we settled into an older-but-spotlessly-clean motel near Graceland for the night.

It is all Elvis, all the time, here, but I do like Elvis....and, they take dogs.

Lily was exhausted from no naps, and happy to be on terra firma.

Going to check out the BB King Museum in Indianola, and drive by my grandparents former place east of there, before heading on to my cousin near McComb for the night.

The museum is closed for the winter, but they have become a Harvest Hosts location and I want to check it out.

I noticed that Lambert’s Cafe in Sikeston, Mo, now has a few RV sites, so these kinds of add-one may be part of the answer to the increase in RV’ers out there.

Brings a little business in off the road, and offers a place for the night.

I am offered an early check-in to the rental place tomorrow...

A meandering day thru the Mississippi Delta yesterday, and have had a good visit with my cousin/his.

Doug loved BB King, and we had hoped to one day do the Blues Trail down here.

I have had a rather teary drive, as with other “first time since”...this will become another beloved place linked to the past, now a solo experience.

Still, it feels good to be going.

Lots of trees in bloom, daffodils coming up everywhere...it is spring in the south.

I really enjoyed that series, and will probably watch it again.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I will start my cardiac rehab probably next week and it will last 12 weeks, so spring travel is not going to happen. Not sure about summer or fall, I guess that depends on what I am able to do. Keep up the posts I enjoy them very much.
By all means do the whole rehab course and follow your doctors advice, but if ypi can also do some "back yard camping" That includes literally putting the awning up in the driveway and setting out the grill to make roasted veggies and other heart healthy treats and inviting a friend or two over for dinner. If your wife doesn't drive (or tow) your Airstream but could learn to, encourage her to take lessons, then find places to overnight within easy range of your doctor... and do that. Nothing helps rehab like seeing your goals starting to be.realized.

Good wishes for an uneventful recovery.

Had a lovely drive south this morning, thru the swamps and bayous or whatever the marshy areas the highway runs thru down in here...so unlike the Midwest.

Lots of houses and outbuildings on stilts, and long legged water birds everywhere...with very mild temps once here to support the plan of walking-while-not-melting.

Buddha smiles, Doug would say.

We are settled into the little house, car is secured in off street parking, have had a walk and found a good meal at Loretta’s just up the street....this sumptuous feast, plus a bowl of freshly made gumbo she offered up that she was taking to her home.

The rental unit is adorable... nicely furnished, very well appointed kitchen, washer/dryer, this cute little courtyard at the rear.

Going to have a glass of wine and a soak in the claw foot tub this evening, and hit the streets for a real walk in the morning.

A bit tired, but looking forward to the week.

Hi Al,

Found this just googling rentals in NOLA that took pets.

The Interstate is still in storage, and fully winterized. We can still have low temps in the teens and 20’s well into April, and I was just not into doing all that right now.

It is a HomeAway rental, and I couldn’t be more pleased. An older place, very quaint, but modern furnishings and appliances inside. And, very reasonable for the location, tho we are between Mardi Gras and JazzFest down here.

We have had a second walk, the other direction, and there is live jazz in several clubs within a couple of blocks of me.

Doug would love it, and we would go in the evening, sit, have a drink, and listen. Not something I will do by myself, tho it is enjoyable from the sidewalk.

This guy is smiling from the wall in the living room here...Doug was a very huge fan.

A sign that he is here with me, I feel. I asked him if he was coming along, on this first trip back, and I think he did.

Yesterday, flipping thru channels on the radio while driving...lots of oldies channels down here...I landed on “Kiss on My List”, our song, and on both of the mix tapes he made me in our early years together.

It made me smile, and cry.

I’ve had my first cafe au lait, minus the beignets just yet as I have had fried fish the past two days.

Cornmeal breaded catfish and shrimp....yum!

This is the section of NOLA we are in, apparently one that is rapidly turning to primarily short term rentals.

Coming back from our long walk this morning, spotted this poster at one of the clubs just up the street from the rental house...Kermit Ruffins, live.

I believe we saw him the year we went to JazzFest, and Doug had several of his cd’s....he would be beside himself at the opportunity to see him again in a small setting, and we would go.

The Quarter is hopping, full of tourists, street musicians and those plying their craft of whatever kind.

Although it is a bit cool, the open air restaurants are full...people doing what they do in the French Quarter.

Such a dog friendly town, everyone smiling at Lily and wanting to pet her....touch-deprived that she is, of course, she obliges with much tail-wagging and snuggling in for as much as she can get. Booger dog.

Her senses seem a bit overwhelmed, between noise, smells and other animals, but she is adjusting quickly...particularly by ignoring the cat that was in the courtyard when I let her out this morning, the horses and plethora of other dogs we pass on the street.

We have walked and walked and walked, and everywhere we go seems to be NOLA at its best....these shotgun style houses are typical, and plentiful, and the style of the one I am in.

Ceilings are high, transom windows top the front and back doors...it has been a charming place from which to wander out.

Julie/BassCan drove in today, and we had a lovely, visiting afternoon...also a delicious lunch at the Marigny Brasserie down the street.

4 years ago at this time, I was in the ICU in Brunswick, Georgia with Doug, he on life support, me hoping for a miracle...that he would wake and say “what the hell???”, then would quickly recover and we would again be on our way.
