If you're lucky, you can get a lakeside site.

i believe Whitefish point is where the museum is that has all the exhibits from the Edmund Fitzgerald. We took that in and it was well worth it. Killed about half a day there.

That's exactly where the Shipwreck Museum is, Red, and you guys went there because Doug & I recommended it, do you remember that?......back that 4th of July weekend in South Dakota, I think.

I want to take the grands there, but their parents won't let me take them so far from home by myself.

I won't go back to the Museum, but want to set my feet in Whitefish Bay again....don't ask me why, cuz I don't know...it's just calling to me.

Watching MASH reruns on TV.....it is cold and raining, good to have electricity.

I had a bit of adventure the other day,,,,.took the Interstate onto one of the unpaved roads up here.....some of which are bladed and not too bad....but this one was not.

No warning signs anywhere....road became more and more narrow, parts were washed out, and then.....directly ahead of me, a gully across the road, about half filled with water, and far too deep and wide for me to cross.

Back up, Margaret Ann...NOW....speaks Doug in my head....and I did. Got us out of there, and in one piece.

Yikes!

Note to self......all side roads in the UP are not created remotely equal.

48 degrees and drizzling when we left our campground this am and moseyed over to Whitefish Bay....no really fast roads up here.

We did unpaved and paved, zigzagging here and there to stay off those little white line roads which I suspected were most unsuitable, like the one from the other day. One of those was plenty.

I am really loving the Pocket Earth app, and its downloadable maps. It keeps perfect track of my location, regardless of Internet signal. Very helpful in remote areas, such as the UP.

If you have never been up here, most of it looks like this....heavily forested, with roads thru it.

Seriously beautiful.

We are settled into this campsite for the night on Andrus Lake in Lake Superior State Forest, just south of Whitefish Bay.

Rain has stopped and the sun is trying to come out.

So true. Never grateful enough for what is in front of me. Just need to take the time to appreciate those in my life.

This was our glorious retirement life together....we worked for it, planned for it, and saved for it....and it calls to me now like it called to the both of us...and if I can, I must go.

Maggie, I recently lost a writing friend. A former RC priest who left the church, but never lost his spirituality. What you wrote reminds me of something he always believed in: Star stuff doesn't die - it's just given a new assignment.

Oooh...I like that FaN, and have saved it to my stash.

I thoroughly believe that finding things to be grateful for helps one thru most anything. It takes a conscious, determined effort, but gratitude lifts you up and settles your heart a bit.

I was chatting with a couple near me yesterday....about my age, in a tent with cots, a space heater, etc. Up here for a week, then on to Pictured Rocks.

In a tent. They seem comfortable and happy, I have to believe this is what they prefer.

They loved my "Van", and were glad I was still going by myself. People just assume I am a "we". Into every conversation of some length, with almost anyone, comes the fact of widowhood. It just does.

He was sure that Doug travels with me. I think so, too, that he is with me at least part of the time. He does have other loved ones to visit.

I have been seeing many heart-shaped stones, and have picked up a couple to keep. Doug may be leading me to them, as roses and hearts were everywhere in our lives together.

I feel sure he has led me to the pile of rose covered items I have accumulated since he's been gone. Sure of it....that if he could, he would, and that he has..... he would find a way to let me know that he and his love are there.

A parallel universe.....one here, one there.

I have a pile of paper hearts he drew over the years, with an arrow thru them and our initials inside, on restaurant table paper, then cut out with the tiny Swiss Army knife he carried.....that knife I kept for myself.....he would then present them to me.....and I of course kept them....every one.

Life goes on. It is a good life, but not the same.

Had a long visit this am with my neighbors.......she also a career social worker, so we swapped stories.....now in academia rather than direct service. Nice people, nice to chat with others. They are comitted tenters....it's what they like.

We are for the night in a NF site on Lake Michigan, starting to work our way back toward Illinois, tho don't look to be there for 4-5 more days.

Still need to find peaches and may stop in Shipshewana for a night.

Temps are cool and lovely, not anxious to return to heat and humidity.

You could not have said it better....

"I thoroughly believe that finding things to be grateful for helps one thru most anything. It takes a conscious, determined effort, but gratitude lifts you up and settles your heart a bit."

If there is a "secret's to a happy life' list, this ranks up near the top.

Thanks, Maggie

We are finding that Lake Michigan beaches are not as dog friendly as Lake Superior, so rather than poke down the eastern shore as planned, we spent a looooooong day driving to just west of Saginaw, where we are settled in for the night.

Lily has been a very tolerant traveler, as always, eyeing me lovingly from the passenger seat, but was very glad to run and stretch her legs here, after about 7 hours on the road. We are at a huge, grassy, perfectly mowed, church-owned, PA campground.....W/E, dump and nice bath house, for the bargain price of $10.

Did find large, beautiful, and delicious peaches. Yum! However many of this 1/2 bushel I purchased make it home, I will store some in the frig and turn the rest into....something.

Going to head to Shipshewana in the am, pick up some flours and grains, perhaps some butter ....and will probably be home sometime Saturday.

It is not at all enjoyable to explore a beach without Lily, nor am I interested in leaving her alone for long periods. She is my near-constant companion, and we rather like it that way. A bit of an abbreviated trip, but beach-less plans call for an early return home, and that's okay.

It has been a lovely, and cool, getaway.

Hi Maggie,

12 Mile Beach may be our favorite campground, but you have to be on the lake side!

All the best,

John S.

But.....have you been to the beach campground at Edisto??

That is our favorite campground of all time.

Got a fairly early start this am and we were in Shipshewana by 11:30 or so....for a restrained stop at E&S Sales.

If you have never been there, it is a great place for anything shelf stable, including dried fruits and vegetables, sold by the pound or ounce and at a fraction of grocery store prices. Also cheese in bulk and butter in 2lb rolls. , etc.

I don't cook like I used to.... when we were two ....but it is still worth a stop for my bread making things....and good butter.

The peaches need AC and processing at the earliest possible time, so we just headed toward home and had another....very....long....day.

I'm tired, and Lily is tired of riding in her nice dog kennel on wheels.

Jam making is on the agenda for tomorrow and Sunday, and baked peach something for Sunday dinner with my son/his. .
