The person who moved the turtle did a good thing. They are endangered.
If you need to move one, handle it by the edges of the shell.
I've handled many of them, mostly when I was a child, and never had a problem. Their defense mechanism is to urinate on their captor, so always hold them at arms' length.
Funniest incident was when my late dog Blackie barked at one all night trying to make it run away. She never quite understood that they just don't do that.

I thought about moving it, but it is a relatively quiet country road, the turtle was quite visible, and I wasn’t sure if handling it would cause a problem...not being schooled in the ways of such things, and I know that some living things should not be touched by humans.
Lily found a baby bunny in the back yard a couple of years back, picking it up gently in her mouth and setting it down several times before I said “leave it”.
And she did, being a good dog, the baby then hopping away, probably in pursuit of its mama.
I always wondered if that bunny’s mama took took it back or if Lily’s scent caused the baby to be rejected.
Lily doesn’t seem to have a need to catch and kill other animals, which is good.
She will bark at them and run them off, but keeps her teeth to herself.
Unlike the pit mix who attacked her two years ago, which catches and kills animals in the back yard and has apparently taught the other otherwise gentle and loving dog there to do the same.

I started reading “The Poppy Field” last night https://www.amazon.com/Poppy-Field-g.../dp/B079QG6L98.
Historical fiction, the main character is a British nurse in WWI…a book type I lean toward, as both of my maternal grandparents were US medical personnel in France in WWI.
There is mention early on of “casualty dogs”, which I don’t recall hearing of before, and had to look them up.
Dogs specially trained to find the wounded and dying on the battlefields, in the trenches, wherever they fell, providing comfort and carrying medical aid to those who could provide some care for themselves while awaiting evacuation.
It brought tears to my eyes.
In this first link is a brief video of these dogs and their handlers, going off to war.

The turtles won't be harmed by human scent. That one was an adult and on its own anyway. Just put them where the environment will allow them to keep their body temperature controlled. They are reptiles, and don't have the internal temperature regulation system we mammals do.

Nope, not a good thing. Here’s why, from the latest training i had to take working in an environment where endangered tortoise species live.
Desert tortoises use the same defense mechanism, they immediately completely empty their bladder. The downside is that they have just dumped their total supply of water, and that kills them. Never, ever pick up or even startle a desert tortoise or any other endangered tortoise.
They are protected, endangered, and the penalties, if Mr. Ranger catches you messing with one, are severe.
Let them completely alone, and they will eventually move on.

I agree that a desert climate changes the picture completely. Local rules are different, so go by the rules wherever you are.

I received an email from Xanterra Last evening that might interest you. I’m not sure if you’ve nixed your plans for the Red Car Tour at Glacier, but limited tour options are now available. Hope you can snag one.

Thank you, and I found that same email in my inbox this morning.
We have planned in a different direction, with Whitefish Mountain Resort, and I think the kids will actually enjoy the Aerial Adventure Park and Scenic Lift much more than they would have the Red Bus Tour.
So, meant to be, it seems.

I had the “capsulotomy” (laser removal of post-cataract surgery scar tissue) on my left eye this morning…about 30 seconds in a chair, click-clicking like he was taking pictures, and it was done.
Right eye scheduled for next week.
Pretty darned amazing technology.

I started this book last night… “All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley's Sack, a Black Family Keepsake”
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...at-she-carried
A little newsletter I get had this story linked in it about this book this afternoon, and with a picture of the actual sack…that I was able to save, to post here.
The sack of this story, below, lives at Middleton Plantation in Charleston, SC.
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/ar...tory-2021-0609
Sigh.

Reading “All that she carried…” the last few nights, it is interesting, rich in historical detail and very, very sad.
The author was not able to determine for certain who the enslaved “Rose” was who gave the sack to her daughter Ashley, there being no written record other than the embroidery on the sack, tho has a pretty good idea her identity as gleaned from meticulous research.
And so, a likely story and historical context is created based on the written stories of freed slaves from around that time, recorded interviews with former slaves after Emancipation. and what is generally known about enslavement, female slaves specifically, and particularly enslavement in the 1800’s in and around Charleston, SC.
Sad, sobering, gut-wrenching.
My Mohs surgery site 2 weeks post-op. Healing nicely, and as the swelling goes down my eyebrow seems to be coming back together.
No makeup on this this morning, but I have tried out the Dermablend concealer stick and it does a very nice job of muting it a bit.
I’ll post another picture of it at six months post-op, for those who may figuratively hit the same rock.

Hi Carol!
I finished this book last night.
Somehow, the sack of this story found its way into a pile of linens for sale at a flea market, or some such place, a buyer finding it and recognizing its historical significance.
And a likely story of its journey was created around it.

I decided I needed a new sun hat for the upcoming trip with the grands, so ordered not one but two off Amazon yesterday.
I was never much of one for sun hats, but am paying the price for it now so trying to take better care.
Inexpensive, two will allow for a sweat-soaked one to be set aside to dry, and this seller had not only purple but rose.
I can coordinate hat colors with whatever I happen to be wearing.
And the kids can spot me in a crowd…butterflies and hummingbirds as well.

Glad you are healing up OK . . . had lots of sun-damaged spots removed a long time ago, and have been more careful since. Lots of current health issues on the table . . . life is a real smorgasbord these day!
As Lidia says on her cooking show: "Tutti a tavola a mangiare!"
Cheers,

Yep, tho the maintenance and upkeep on our bodies is part and parcel of staying alive into our 70’s, 80’s or 90’s, right?
We get older or we die, and I’d like to think I have some years left in me.
I am grateful every day.

The grands weeks ago got my assurance that we would start this trip with a bag of homemade cookies…because this Grandma has always baked cookies, when I was raising my children and with which to spoil my grands and others over the years.
It’s what my mother did, it’s what I have always done.
So, double chocolate chip cookie dough is in the freezer to bake the day before we leave, and I also made this homemade granola bar recipe the other day and stashed them in the freezer, as well.
These are very good, not too sweet, hold together nicely because of the addition of eggs, and are packed with oats and the protein of the peanut butter..so will have some staying power for active teenagers.
And mini chocolate chips within, the last of the bag sprinkled on top.
What’s not to love, right?

Maybe 8-9 years ago, Doug transplanted a “volunteer” baby cedar tree from the tree line at the back of this property into the back yard.
He had planned to do this every year, but…life interfered.
I have trimmed this tree a couple of times, but not for the past few years and so it needed it.
On my to-do list all spring, I decided that today was going to be the day it was going to get done.
So, after walking Lily and before it gets too hot out, I donned gloves, wrangled the reciprocating saw and 100 foot extension cord to the far back of the yard…and did it.
A male cardinal was sitting on a branch of this tree as I approached…and I thought somewhere, Doug is cheering me on.
It didn’t take very long to remove two complete rows of branches, tho I had to do so on my knees, and my mowing guys will be very pleased that there is more clearance beneath.
I looooove the smell of cedar.
