Thanks, all...I am home, Lily is happy to be back, a fire is going in the woodstove, and all is okay.

Thanks, everyone.
When my son was here yesterday, after he had brought in wood for me and helped me get settled a bit, he was sitting on the couch when he saw a bright red cardinal land and spend some time on my front porch.
Doug’s favorite bird...perhaps he was checking in on me.
If I sort of wink to close my left eye, I can see pretty well to read or type, but it is slow...with both eyes, there is double vision.
My sweet neighbors across the street brought me turkey with homemade noodles last night...they’re so sweet...dinner today. They can be here in a matter of seconds, should I need them, but hopefully I will not.
When processing me for discharge yesterday, I was told I should have called an ambulance, rather than my son, but I didn’t realize I was having a stroke.
Lily would have aggressively protected the front door from strangers coming in, and I dont know what she would have done if they started touching me.
Off the blood thinners, tho, the chance of recurrence seems very small...
Getting follow up appointments made, and glad to be home.
Maggie

When I told my (hospital lab director) daughter what had happened to you, she gave me that same speech--call 911, don't call me. The EMT's who crew the ambulances these days have access to meds that can limit the damage one suffers from a stroke, heart attack, whatever. However, I agree that it can be hard to tell what's going on, so no judgement here for what you did, just an echo of the advice they gave you.
Back when we were growing up, all an ambulance could offer was speedy transport to a hospital. They were actually operated by the funeral homes, so their economic incentives weren't necessarily directed toward patient recovery. That background may condition our generation towards calling someone else first.
I'm sure the EMT's have techniques for dealing with protective canines, and I hope they are gentle about doing it. Anyone here know what they do in that situation? Now, I'm curious.

Jan and I are very saddened to hear of this physical problem, if anyone can beat this
bump in the road it is YOU. Please thank our Lord that it only is a reminder of each
precious day and we only have a finite number, known only to him. I hope to see you
heal quickly and be out on the road and blogging very soon with Lily by your side and
riding shotgun. AEW

Sorry to hear of the "incident", but glad your son reacted so quickly and appropriately by taking you in to the hospital.
Mimi, the EMTs in our area often are faced with aggressive dogs, not like Lily, much more so. Actually anytime an ambulance is called an LEO is either their first, as in our town, or arrives at the same time. The LEO's are equipped with devices to restrain a dog and thereby put it in a room and close the door. It does delay things, being in dog rescue what we recommend and tell people is if an ambulance is called and one is capable to lock the dog(s) up before they get there so as not to delay any medical care, this applies to any dog, not just aggressive or one(s) that might be aggressive as in a situation like Maggie's, any dog picks up on the different movements of the owner, the scent of the owner is new and different and the dog can become confused and then new people with equipment etc. Crate or room before they get there IF possible.
Maggie, prayers from us
Bud, Alice, Abby and Hopey

Thanks, Bud. That's good to know. I'm not sure my Blackie is as protective of me as Lily is of Maggie, but she might decide to be if I were hurting and strangers showed up at the door.
In normal times, Blackie protects me against critters and welcomes people. Just let a raccoon amble across the yard, and she has a conniption fit.

Also a good practice to tell the 911 dispatcher that you have a dog-- especially if you can't secure the animal before the EMTs arrive.
Personally, I don't think my cat would be a threat to any responding EMTs. But I'd still tell them that I have one. I also carry a wallet card for my cat, that identifies an alternate caregiver, with contact info, so that if I'm hospitalized with no chance to call someone (unconscious or whatever) at least someone can call that person to retrieve and care for my pet.

If you can call then put the dog in a room so the emts dont have to deal with her.here the leos seldom come with the emts and they have the right to subdue the dog anyway possiblee if its loose if they do show up.

Being able to dial 911 and speak doesn't necessarily mean that you can stand up and move a dog to a different room. Depends on the injury in question. Especially if it's an outdoor dog in the yard and you're indoors when you incapacitate yourself.

Please don't get upset. I used to be an engineer, and my mind tends to take things literally whether I want it to or not.* So when I see an "if/then" statement, I natually assume that the "then" is predicated on the "if." In this case "If you can call" and "then put the dog in a room." I merely pointed out that being able to call doesn't always mean that you are able to put the dog in a room. It wasn't meant as a criticism.
*It appears that my mind has a mind of its own!

Thanks for the well wishes, Bud and Ed.
I’m learning to squint my left eye closed, allowing the right one to focus....much easier to make phone calls, put appts on my calendar, etc., but eye strain comes quick and a headache follows.
Adapting to changing circumstances, it’s what I do.
God forbid I have another of these, but I would call 911 first, then my son, who is only a mile away and would handle the dog.
I hadn’t thought about putting her in the bedroom, but that is a great idea, and the logical thing to do if one can get it done.
I wouldn’t want her hurt.
Maggie
