We enjoyed meeting and visiting with you and your wife, Bill.

My tire is still flat as a pancake...I must have ridden over something sharp.

Am hoping to find a bicycle shop while I am in Eugene.

Here's hoping for that bike shop! Any REI would also likely take care of it for you, as they usually have a bike shop inside.

Looking at big bucks here at the MB dealership in Eugene.

The "glow plugs and board" need replaced, they're going to flush and replace the brake fluid...not done when the brakes were replaced a few weeks back, and not on my watch these past 2 1/2 years...also a transmission service, not done on my watch, either.

30,000 miles of solo travel, and I have left it to the service guys to notice and do whatever needs to be done...a substitute husband, has been my likely mindset and approach, when there is no comprehensive, all inclusive substitute ...I am overdue for a good look at the engine by a MB service person, as they tend to things Peterbilt doesn't.

It simply never occurred to me.

Doug always had Peterbilt do the engine service, but also paid attention to all those things I know nothing about. He may have had it in to MB at home, but I don't remember when or if.

I had developed some weeks ago a leak at my sewer connection, which I was going to deal with when I got home as it was only when unscrewing the cap that it was an issue...small something underneath can catch the spillage...but that became a steady drip overnight.

Tillamook RV is going to look at it in the morning.

Mimi has been telling me I need to learn what needs to be done, and when, to my rig...lost a wheel last year, then the brakes just recently, now overdue things that could have been another small disaster...I have been relying on strangers to do what Doug did, not wanting to know about it and do it myself.

I am going to be more pro-active, starting today, going to pull out my service manual and just do it.

Sigh.

Maggie, it seems to me that you have been doing a fine job of handling all the chores decisions and the tasks, that two people would have shared, in the last couple of years.

While it is good to know when these services need to be done it is certainly not necessary for you to have to perform them yourself.

Paying service hours at a professional garage such as Mercedes-Benz is certainly quite expensive. Maybe an option for when you get home is to find a local service center that can do many of the same tasks for a lower service hour rate.

You are only one person and even people with the skill sets need to pay to hire the professionals some time.

Don't be to hard on yourself.

Sending best wishes.🌹

Thanks for the good wishes, but I am acknowledging reality, here.

I don't need to know how to do everything, I do need to know what needs to be done....and get it taken care of.

I've been in denial, thinking some things I am just unfamiliar with will take care of themselves.

Not so much beating myself up, but I am lucky the vehicle issues have not been worse.

I need to get a handle on them, and be proactive, if I'm going to keep doing this by myself.

It's fine, this is a good time to pick up the next bunch of things and be in charge of them. Mimi gives good advice.

She does give good advice, and goodness knows I don't have trouble taking charge of things.

After 3pm when we left the MB dealer in Eugene and headed back to Gail and Bay City. Yikes.

It has been an intense couple of days, but lots is now done and the Interstate should be good to go for quite awhile.

Altho costly, I am comfortable with what the service guy recommended, and think it fortuitous that Cummins couldn't service this engine and sent me there...things needed tended to, and it was a wake-up call for me to get on top of the mechanical things.

Unfamiliar to me, I have been in denial about the necessity of learning.

He did say several times that the engine looked great for 176,000+ miles, tho, and pointed out that I drove onto their lot so apparently have been taking care of it.

Tomorrow we're going to drop it off to have the black tank looked at, and do some poking around antique shops in the area.

So, aside from the mechanic's bill, your Interstate is doing just fine. Yay!

Dropped the Interstate off at Tillamook RV this am, where they predict a new valve is needed, and are going to get it done today so that I can start I heading inland as planned in the morning.

They were a bit horrified at the location of the sewer connection in this rig...something Doug cursed often, and I have done the same.

Gail and I got a Starbucks....she is addicted to Starbucks ...then took Lily for a run on Rockaway Beach.

Dogs can run loose on the beaches here, and she has had a blast.

Poked around a few shops and had lunch at the little restaurant overlooking the beach...lovely.

Kudos to Tillamook RV, who got the valve replaced for me and I now have a fully functioning sewer connection.

The moral to this story....don't wait, it will only get worse.

They recommend dumping a couple of gallons of hot water with 1/4 cup vegetable into the (empty) black tank periodically, to keep the valve lubricated and working properly.

This one was 10 years old, tho, so Doug would say it didn't owe us anything.

We met some of Gail's friends for coffee late yesterday afternoon, and one of them snapped this picture of she and I...which I sent on to Lili-in-England/TinCrumpet, another remote friend of both of ours, who I have yet to meet.

I've especially enjoyed this time with Gail, who it feels like I've been friends with forever.

With some people, you just connect. You get them, they get you, your souls speak to each other, and in the same language.

Doug and I had that, and I have that with some others in my life. It is a gift, to be recognized, embraced and grateful for.

Those who believe in past lives say that people who are important in our lives today have also been so in other lives...friends, enemies, foes, family.

I rather like the idea that we love and caretake each other thru many lives, not so much that we are fighting battles today with those we have fought and have unfinished business with from the past.

I'll focus on the former, not the latter.

Great picture of you and Lily on the beach. There is a book someplace or on the internet of what needs to be done when on your Interstate. When I worked my drivers and mechanics were anal about the books - now out on our own, running on our own I picked up their habit of reading the books, our diesel has two, and following them to the letter OR sooner.

Safe travels, we left Spearfish and slowly heading home, by way of North Carolina to see my father who is 93 and just got a new hip.
