which after market hitch receiver for '70s Argosy

What is the best hitch reiver to fit under a 1975 argosy 20 or rather which receiver will fit best in terms of being solid and not to low unde the bumper? I have seen adjustable ones which dont appeal (to many moving parts) a 34 inch wide solid one (but that looks as if its actual hitch may be to low....)

Is it correct that the p30 chassis is 34 inch wide?

thx

Wiebe

I assume you are talking about the 'hitch', not the 'hitch receiver' - the receiver is the part that's attached to the tow vehicle (TV), and the 'hitch' fits into the receiver...

A hitch for connecting your travel trailer to the tow vehicle is, in many cases a personal choice - there are many mfg's and models to choose from...

I'd suggest you do a search here on the forums to see lots and lots of comments - or - search on the net for many mfg's information...

In most cases you'll want a Weight Distributing (WD) type hitch to transfer some of the trailer's tongue weight to the TV's front axle for safety, etc...

There's lots of choices for you to check out...good luck!

Wiebe seems to be asking about a receiver to tow behind an Argosy motorhome based on a GM P-30 chassis.

Here's a google search based on searchwords: p30 chassis hitch receiver

Somebody should refresh (bump) this thread early Saturday for the greater site traffic during the morning hours...

I have done that search (yes I am looking for the receiver as my argosy 20 will not come with one) and the results I cant do anything with as I do not know the exact dimensions for the frame (thought 34 but not sure) and because some have a tube (where the hitch slides into) which sits higher andothers which sits lower under frame. I's want to have one which sits as high as possible under the bumper.

thx

WIebe:

Is your Argosy 20' a travel trailer or a motor home? That basic clarification might help focus the discussion.

Always had luck with Reese equipment.

Do a search for "truck/trailer supply" in your area they should be able to help with any fabrication.....I have used STS in our area.

Cheerio....just noticed, good luck.

The question was posted in the Argosy Motorhome section and he asks about a P30 chassis so I would assume he is talking about an Argosy Motorhome.

WIebe, I'll try and get outside to measure our 20' Argosy MH and let you know the width of the rails.

WIebe,

On our 1974 Argosy Motorhome the frame rails in back are 34" outside to outside. There are some welded on extensions but they are just to lower the frame not to make it longer. The attached pics aren't very good but its all I have. You can see the factory hitch in these photos as well.

Brad, thank you that is very clear. I did not realise that there was a crossmember that strong to do what the factory did. Which means that ordering a sufficiently long enough hollow bar would be enough and I can have a works hop weld it in the same way.

thx!!

It usually slots straight into the receptacle on the back of the P30 chassis. You can attach a towbar and tow a car or put on a big rack. You can get them for about £40 in the UK.
