What's your interstate speed

We're taking our '75 26 Argosy MH on it's longest trip to date since we got her. All mechanicals have been tended to: tune up, carb rebuild, transmssion service, coolant flush, remote air cleaner, fuel sender rebuild etc. This will also be the first trip where we will be on the interstate instead of local state roads.

So what's your comfortable and efficient interstate cruising speed? I'm assuming there's an MPG drop as some speed...somewhere in the mid 60's?

Usually 65. May be a little higher or lower. I get around 12 MPG with the Chevy and 13.5 with the Ford.

If you're looking for most fuel efficient speed, 52 is about the best, but be prepared for a lot of one fingered salutes... There's a reason the highway mileage for cars and trucks is tested at 50.
Probably the best speed/mileage speed would be 60-62. With our Burb and trailer combo, we get 8.2 at 60-65 mph At 75 we get 6, so it drops off pretty fast.
Of course, we get 9 without the trailer...

We tow between 60-65mph. I had a blowout once on my Excursion towing at 70mph and will never do that again.

I agree with Terry. About 60/62 and let the rest of them go burn up all that fuel. Just keep right to avoid some of the one fingered salutes and the rest are just showin you thier IQ.

60-65 for me in the rh lane. Better mileage and it keeps me from having to slow down/speed up as much or having to pass a semi. Also with a single axel it's safer for me and everyone around me. it's amazing how much better mileage you get @ 60 mph. Have a fun and safe trip.

We do about 65 mph on the interstate. Downhill we hit about 70, and on an uphill, we're usually down to about to about 60.

I keep it at between 60 and 65 , though sometimes my heavy size 13s does make it creep up a tad...

We set the cruise control at 62. Towing at this speed in the flat states we get 17 mpg and in the mountain states 13.5 mpg. (2008 GMC 2500HD)

After we started to travel in our MH (1st one a 26' 77 GMC and now our 89 345) have settled pretty much on 62. Seems not to increase much time, and the fuel savings is substantial. Example, from home here in SE Florida to New Mexico I figured mabe an extra 4 hours travel! Even towing a 66 Tradewind with then our 2500 Suburban, followed much the same speeds. If we have a 2-3 hour run and are late, 70 is no problem, but sucks the fuel.

Thanks for all the replies. We're looking at a 3 hour drive with normal driving and I think about 2 hours of it is interstate. I'm tempted to be more conservative driving there and more aggressive on the return to see what the difference it. And we'll be on I-4 through Orlando on a Friday afternoon so I'm sure we'll get many one-finger salutes. Makes me want air horns.

You have a pretty good consensus going here. We have found over the years that we settle into a sweet spot between 58 and 62. We tend to drive some long distances. With our rear, we're running at 2850 -3000 at those speeds. I must confess the ride really smooths out over 70, but over the speeds mentioned here we drop about 2 mpg. That's a lot when your getting 9-10 mpg at best.

Another consideration, in addition; how large is your fuel tank? You may find your range severely limited. If you need to use your roof air and the onan, you can probably count on not much improvement in mileage or possibly less over engine air alone. The limitation is that your generator feeds of the vehicles tank and can only access from the top half of the tank or so so you don't get stranded at the campground. Hopefully you have the 50 gal.

No matter how fast you drive, there will always be people who just have to get ahead of the RV. You can never go fast enough for them. I ignore them all. Find the speed you're comfortable with and stick with it.

We tow our Argosy between 55 and 60 mph.

We just completed a trip to Kentucky and back in our motorhome. 55mph except on longer hills when I turned off overdrive and set the cruise on 50 mph. We received 1 small air blast from a passing tractor trailer at 55mph. Otherwise, no rude comments that I noticed.

I usually try to keep it under 65 miles per hour. I don't thinkt ST Tires are built for anymore speed than that. jc

We do 60-62 max. Mileage drops off fast when you go fast. It's safer with the trailer too.

We have a 50 gallon tank. The generator needs some work from sitting so roof air while running is out for now, and of course the dash air isn't working. A wonderful combination for Florida summers.

We run around 62 on the freeway. TV is an 09 Silverado 4x4 w/5.3 gasser. We get 14 mpg all day long until a head wind. Not bad but remember our 65 vintage 22' Safari is not very heavy.....Tim
