I made a lovely "scar" down the side of my 25' international from door to bedroom side window while making a right turn into my neighborhood and connecting with the stop sign on the corner.... never felt a thing...
Now that can laugh about it, I've wanted to get a big aluminum key like used to be on cans to attach at the end of the crease!

Last July I was driving cross country from Montana to Hershey, PA. Got into Hershey at night on the PA Turnpike, under construction, heavy traffic, lanes shifting, and finally boxed in by 3 semi trucks........needless to say I hit the guard rail on the right side, actually I think I hit it twice and bounced off. Was towing a Jeep so figured it was damaged too.

Finally got into a Walmart parking lot to inspect with good news and bad news. Good news is the Jeep was untouched, bad news is 3 compartment doors on right side had a long black streak and my docking light was busted.

Could always have been worse. No chance you could blame it on the copilot?

During the 20+ years of selling auto insurance I learned whenever a moving object hits a stationary object it is always the fault of the stationary object.

My work motto- do not commit the same mistake again.

Make a long prop stick that you stick in the door frame that the overhead door will rest upon when opened fully. Now you have a physical confirmation you will not hit the door.
