Safety Chains Do Work
We have just returned from a trip through Canada,Vermont, and New Hampshire to Maine and of course back home. This was the first time we pulled our Saturn on a long trip and found it quite a convenience to have with us. My son and his wife were traveling with us and he and I would get the Saturn hitched in a matter of minutes each morning. Then there was that morning in Vermont. We both were certain we had put on the cotter pins on the pins that hold the tow bar to the base plate. Fortunately we did have the safety chains on. My son was driving through the hills of New Hampshire when this car pulls up next to us and starts to gesticulate madly toward the back of Chummy and mouthing the word "CAR-CAR-CAR." We had two choices, One they really liked our green Saturn or two something was wrong. My son chose the latter and pulled over. I jumped out to find the Saturn being towed by just the safety chains! The tow bar was still attached to the ball but was resting just above the pavement. The result. No damage other than our pride. It did cost us $5.15 at an RV dealer for new pins with the cotter pins. The wives doubled checked the connection and the cotter pins before we took off from that day on.
