Smile New to Airstreams Looking to buy our first one. Have some questions.

My wife and I are planning on buying our first Airstream.

It is a 2005 Safari that is listed in the classifieds on this forum.
2005 AIRSTREAM SAFARI LS 25 FEET--1 OWNER - Airstream Trailer Classifieds - Airstream Trailers For Sale

I know from working on classic cars that there are preferred models and years, and ones you want to stay away from.

We really don't know a whole lot about these campers and would like your suggestions please.

Towing should not be a problem for our Dodge with the Cummins engine.

Is there anything we should watch out for ?
Or any suggestions you think would be helpful ?

Thank You
Rich and Tracy

Hi Rich and Tracy,

In November, we bought a 2006 25FB SE with panoramic windows in the back. So far, it has been wonderful with no major problems. We did fix a leak in the front window and used Parbond to seal the lower trim line. We have, however, heard that similar models in the late 2000's range have had leak problems under the rear dinette beneath the panoramic windows causing floor rot. I would definitely check that carefully. We had someone with more experience check our floor, and he thought it looked fine. We also have a skylight that the previous owner said had leaked, but it's been professionally repaired. Other than that, we absolutely love our Airstream and have camped often since we bought it. Good luck, and I hope it works out for you. Keep us posted, Carol

Not trying to talk you out of your decision, but I think that for this kind of money you could get a nicer trailer. The model you're looking at has no panoramic windows, which is making the interior quite dark.

This is of course a personal preference, but I always thought that in a small space like a trailer large windows make the difference between claustrophobia and a feeling of space.

Do you like the trailer?

I wouldn't be too concerned about resale, or what is popular. The panoramic windows might not be great for a late sleeper.

You should like the trailer enough to spend time and money, that you might not get back. Airstreams hold their value very well, but any trailer, boat, sports car are all money pits. Luxury is for enjoyment, not profit.

I don't know if you noticed, but this unit has some fairly obvious damage to the front section around the front window. The seller describes this as "hail damage" but if that's true it must have been some b-i-g hail.

If you like this trailer, it would make sense to me to get a proper quote from an AS dealer who is active in doing this sort of repair before proceeding. I personally think the question people would ask about the damage would have you running to get it repaired before long...

It would also be a good idea to get a survey done on this unit by one of the Airstream Inspectors listed under the link of the Portal page. The you will have a very good idea of its value.

Good luck with your purchase!
If it's to be, it's up to me.
