Many years ago, I had a Zemco Trip/MPG Computer on my Mini in the UK, and I loved it.
You can use them on Carbed engines that dont have a fuel return after the pump as the flow sensor goes between the pump and carb.

Uses magnets mounted on the driveshaft to sense speed, and just a few electrical connections. maybe a couple of hours for me to fit.

Gives you Instant and Average MPG, Trip and a bunch of other stuff.

I was shocked to find a new and unused one on Ebay last month and I snapped it up!
Here:

I just saw another one, with 2 days left!
Here:
ZEMCO ZT-4 DRIVING COMPUTER WITH INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETE - eBay (item 110636602076 end time Jan-22-11 17:17:27 PST)

Note!!! there is something wrong with the bidding, look at bid history, zero bidder is jacking it up. and doing it without automatic bids.

Bids

Dave:
If you click the "show automatic bids" it shows "0" has been there from the start. This shows he placed a high bid of $40.00 early on. He will have to bid again now if a new bid comes.

Keyair,
Seller has good rating with Ebay, the winner did use an automatic bid to win, so was expecting to pay the same as you, what I don't like is when a zero bid winner moves the price up or wins and doesn't complete the sale.

I would like to find one that works with the newer 454 with the return gas line.

Agreed, seen that too many times!

As for your M/H, I looked at the Installation manual and hope you can read this pic I took.

My info is that most mechanical fuel pumps on 454's have a return line from pump itself, to allow excess pressure NOT USED by the Carb to vent back to tank. For example, 4000rpm climbing a steep hill would max out the pump and the fuel consumption too, but then cresting the hill and going downhill, throttle shut with 4000rpm, would still have the pump on max output, but the excess pressure and volume, un-needed now would go back to the tank.
By installing the sensor between the pump and carb only the fuel flowing into the carb is measured, which is what you want.

Yours would be a TBI?
Looks like they had a kit that would have worked on that...

TBI 454 when I traced the fuel lines, one goes back after the fuel rail back to the tank. I will check where it pressure reduces and excess fuel removed. Is company still making unit? Box and pictures show very old style display not lcd. Similar to calculators of twenty years ago. Newer models of fuel scan were at 150 on ebay, incorporate info from computer, wish I had researched before I purchased the separate code scanner.

Yes, the TBI unit poses problems. I have a TBI equipped 454 Suburban, and know that there is a fuel return.
If it was OBD2 controlled there are units that plug into the OBD2 port and can give the readout of fuel consumption, but I think they are ALD controllers.
The Zemco unit is sweet, and the only way I have found to get MPG readouts from older carb equipped vehicles, but they are from the mid 80's and long out of production.

ScanGauge II Driving Computer OBDII-CAN Scan Tool - eBay (item 280266160215 end time Jan-29-11 11:37:37 PST)

This one would do it all, if my obdII malfunctions I will move on to one like this, install would be a simple plug at the dash.

Thanks, looked again and discounted due to 21 shipping a couple ounce part, I liked the 4 item screen on the scan gauge. 90 for mpg screen I'll do the math. lol or wait for another zemco to come up.

I had one of these units (Zemco) on my 1976 Blazer and it worked great.

Todays vehicles need the scan gage cost a lot more but also provide a lot more information.
