Michigan Registration

Should have asked before going to the DMV to register my 1995 360 classic diesel pusher. Colorado was costing me about $250 + $100 for a diesel emissions test. State Farm insurance was running another $650.

Nearly $1000 for plates and title. Quoted $900 a year after that. State Farm another $1000 for the same coverage as Colorado. Being honest I presented the certified weight and original invoice showing $172k.

Should I have lied? Should I register it in another state through an LLC? Any other options in Michigan?

I have registered two vehicles in Montana. For our 1984 310, title and plates for a year were under $100. When renewed, I was asked whether I wanted to have permanent plates for $275, and nearly hurt myself reaching for my checkbook. This spring I shipped a 1993 Toyota Landcruiser from Hawaii, title change and registration cost $74 when I got to Montana. The lady at the window said that it is old enough for permanent plates, will probably do that next year. I see online that LLC's for rv registrations are something of a cottage industry there.

If you moved to Michigan you did the right thing.

The infamous Montana LLC scheme is ok if you live in Montana or are a full timer using Montana as your state of residence. But the problem starts when you live someplace else that has sales taxes. It's also a problem between Oregon (no sales tax) and California or Washington.

Generally you start to have problems when you live in a state and then have vehicle registrations and driver's licenses that don't match. No problem until you have an incident that gets law enforcement involved. Here are some links to articles on the Montana LLC matter.

Michigan uses a prorated original value. For a car it's not so bad. For a motorhome is a kick in the teeth. I could probably gotten away with telling them it was $70 and saved a bunch of money. Until some get bean counter finds a goldmine and starts auditing such things.

Airplanes in Colorado were a target years ago. I watched several friends with gliders get dinged with back taxes, penalties, interest on the tax, plus interest on the penalties. Some forked out over $3000 it fly their toys around Colorado. Some moved them to Wyoming just to get caught up a year later by Wyoming.

Someone had to have paid the tax in 1995. Right. Today your going to pay tax again on $172k. Market value today is what. I am confused. What percentage do you pay Tax on in Michigan on a used RV.
