Gentlemen, You have been a fantastic source of information. I appreciated it. I will check the HWH operation upon my return as I am away on business for another 10 days or so. I do frequently cycle the HWH system, at least one per month. The campsite, "looks very level," and I

do not get the "excess slope" indictor. If the jack doesn't retract, how can I get it up? 3/4 retract fine, simply one rear doesn't. Thanks again, I will call HWH as suggested. This is the greatest Airstream forum!

BC,

You might be having a problem with your retract solenoid not fully opening to allow the fluid to travel from the jack back into the reservoir.

First, you have to identify the hydraulic hose that comes from the non-retracting jack. Then, follow it to the solenoid where it connects to the pump manifold.

On the end of the solenoid, you will either have a 'T' handle or a 1/4" hex nut. You have to open this all the way counter clockwise. This 'should' allow the fluid back into the reservoir from the jack and allow it to retract by the force of the 2 springs. You also might try to use a leveredge bar at this point to raise the jack, incase your springs are weak and need replacing.

If this doesn't work, your next move is to leave the nut/T-handle open and remove the hydraulic hose. Be prepared for a stream of fluid!!!... and have a vessel ready to catch and contain it.

If you don't get fluid out of the hose from the retract action of the jack, and you can't raise it with a leveredge bar, you have a bad jack that needs to be replaced!!!

I have had to replace 4 jacks on a coach with this same problem!!!

Hope this helps!

HWH Schematics and Flow Diagrams
For the technically inclined and the curious this is a link to HWH and the hydraulic flow diagrams for various systems. Standard stuff really, but fascinating to those who work hydraulics. The sequenceing control of the kick down cylinder(not on all systems) operation before jack extension is interesting.Tried to find a cutaway or exploded veiw of jack online but its not there as they expect every one to just replace the ram instead of rebuild it I guess , and that really is the easiest fastest cheapest method. Will ask for them to email a cutaway if they have one.

Following is a communication from HWH technical service.

Hi,You where kind enough to forward a print of a jack
> cylinder. I have some questions that I hope you will be kind enough to
> help with. The ram is hollow so the nipple on the end of the ram would
> drain the fluid if bolt or plug removed? Second with the cylinder
> retracted there would be minimal oil between the cylinder and the ram
> since there appears to be a seal/wiper at the top of the ram?

Date: Fri 05/16/08 12:26 PM No the nipple at the bottom of the ram is machined on and can not be removed. The only way to drain any oil out of the cylinder is to either remove the switch or the fitting on top of the jack and turn it upside down to drain. Yes you are correct there is minimal oil on the cylinder when the jack is retracted. Thank you Joe Portelli

I will suggest again leaving extended to protect the interior of the cylinder by keeping
it filled with oil since we cant access it to protect other wise , and coat the exposed rod
or cover it to protect it since we have access to it when extended , if you coat it clean the
coating off before retracting.
