Generator Fumes

I own a 1995 33 1/2 LY. Doe any one have a exhaust fume problem with the generator while dry camping? When I have the jacks down awning out and the generator running, I can't stay under the awning it gets to smelly with exhaust gasses. Even if I left one of the side windows open just a bit it seems to creep inside, but when I stay out side and look and smell it I can really smell it to bad. The CO detector doesn't make a peep either . Any ideas? Thanks Jim

I'm not familiar with the getset location on the LY. If it's curbside I could see why exhaust would collect under your awning. If you haven't already checked the exhaust system and muffler you might want to get under there and make sure everything is connected and there are no leaks around the flange gaskets. It sounds like you could have a leak which catches fumes under the coach. Also, I've seen an exhaust extension tube in the back of Motorhome Magazine that carries your genset exhaust up the side of the coach and over the roofline through a temporary (while camping) chimney.

If you smell fumes, there is Carbon Monoxide present. Carbon Monixide is odorless. Please be careful.

The location of the generator in the LY is driver side and when you face the side of the MH it's to the left of the rear axle. As for the exhaust system it looks to be in good shape, may be its "extra heat" off the generator I smell? . So I assume that no one else has this problem like I thought. My next step is to use an exhaust probe from inspection machine to measure the fumes.

lots of dry campers use generator exhaust tubes to aim the exhaust up in the air over the side of the motorhome, especially those who camp at Nascar and other events where they are side by side.

On some of the Onans the exhaust and air from cooling don't dump too far from each other. Could be the exhaust is being forced under the mh and that is what you smell.
