I've been considering purchasing a 90's model Airstream MH and would like to know any opinions you have on the Classic vs. Land Yacht. Which is better? I like the retro look of the Classics. What is the difference in quality?
The 90's classics are tried-true and battle tested. The early LY's were.....at the beginning of Airstream's learning curve. I have heard of more 'issues' with the 1989-1991 LY's. Don't get me wrong, some are still very nice units.
The LY's will have more storage (above and below) and potentially a more efficient engine (fule injected) and possibly a 4 speed transmission (better MPG).
I think you will find that a 90's LY will cost about the same as a lot earlier Classic. The chassis will be the same...the engine similiar...the main thing is the Classic will hold better value; with due maintenance and care...down the road.
Other than that the LY styling is fresher inside and as stated above storage is better.
For mere practicality the LY might be a better buy. But for aesthetics, and that feeling of owning a true aluminum time capsule, the Classic sure is fun.
Per Airstream Life, Airstream is about to reintroduce the Classic Motorhome. It will be in the $300K price range if memory serves me. What is old is new again.
