refrigerator

My refrigerator quit working....or I should say....I'm sure it was working when I got the RV home....now it's not working. I think what happen is that I operated it in a very unlevel position. A book I have says that can make a refrig quit working. The book also says...it is worth a try...to take the refrig out and lay it on it's left side for a couple hours. My question....the book does not tell me which side is the left side. I am assuming that it is the left side as I am standing in front looking into the frig. I know this question sounds dumb...but the book says IT'S left side. Anyway....I've tried both sides and it does not seem to be working....does anyone have any tips on what I should check. Book simply says if laying on left does not work must replace unit. Hope that's not the case

Charles.

well something seem to work for me also...

All the components appliances, switches and wiring works and is in original condition so, if you need photos of a place or a part to know 'how it was' or how it should be - I would be happy to help. Also, I have ALL the original manuals down to how the oven works and a recipe book for 'cooking on the road' I could have any of them copied for you - let me know what you need and I can get a cost from Staples to copy and bind. Good luck with your project. We just love our 'Betsy' she may be alittle outdated but they just don't make them like they used to - she makes the newer RVs we looked seem like milk cartons on wheels. These are just such solid vehicles. What kind of Gas mileage did you get traveling? Did you use Premium grade. The man who owned ours previously said they run better and get better milage on Premium.
I'm interested in your comment about premium fuel. Most of the older 454's run fine on regular so there is absolutely no advantage to using the big bucks $$ stuff. If your engine does not ping under throttle, do not waste your money. Pay attention in high altitude and when going up steep grades. I do spend the extra $$ on synthetic oil.

reg fuel

I also have a 454 in my 77 24ft. argosy. It runs fine doesn't ping. I have driven it across Canada, down to Yuma. It runs as good at sea level as over the mountains. It runs in hot weather and freezing weather. I also use regular Oil. Change oil and filter every 2000,3000 miles.

fuel

I drove 1600 miles from PHX to TN and used low lead all the way.....didn't notice any problems even at higher altitudes. 454 engine with a fresh tune up....so maybe that helped.

We have put about 5,000 on our 345 since we got it. the 454 seems to run fine on the lower octane fuel. I have not tried the premium, so I don't know if premium would provide any advantages.

someone said that they had "all the manuals"? does anyone have the wiring diagrams for the coach itself? I have the diagrams for the chasis.. but what that did in the factory while building the upper sectoin would really help.

and mine will idle on just about anything.... but starting out from a stop usually causes some chugging and lack of power. it sat for almost 5 years with no care so I think that i have a carb rebuild job in the future.

some of you have replace some of the sub flooring, are you using marine ply or just an exterior ply?

painting....... cost.... prep.... yikes.....

in the Navy we used a system called a vacueblaster. it worked like a sand blaster, but was contained with in a vacume that all particles were sucked up as it clean the paint off the side of the aluminum (sp?). It also used baking soda (not sand) that when you were done you washed the trash bin with water melting the baking soda leaving just the paint particles to be properly handled. does anyone know you can rent such a tool. prep work might save a lot of money on the paint job.

Flooring

Finally got the wood flooring installed in the Dixie Dove. I was supprised at how easy it actually was to install. I installed a glueless....snap together type floor. Would be a lot easier if everything was removed...i.e. refrig....sink....etc.... but I didn't do it that way....had to make several cuts around things but I think it turned out ok. Now I am waiting on getting my chairs back from being reupholstered....can't wait. It is so nice to see things going back together

New to the crew

Hello! Not sure if y’all are still posting on here or not. I just purchased a 1978 Argosy 28ft. There are some things I need to replace or upgrade but for the most part, she’s ready to cruise! I have the complete manual for my rig, if anyone is looking for one (a copy of course). Main things I’ll do right away is replace side mirrors, windshield wipers, dash and gauges (she runs, I just don’t know how fast, how much gas, etc), seatbelts for kids and a backup camera.

I don’t think I’ll attack the dash until the fall/winter 2024. I would love pointers, suggestions and things to avoid, etc. Thanks soo much!

Hi Stevie

Welcome to the forum.

The Argosy motorhome sub-forum is a little quite at the moment (the whole classic motorhome section is for that matter) and we need a project to follow along with to energize us!

Please consider starting you own thread in the Argosy sub-forum (https://www.airforums.com/forums/f310/) to give us a little light relief from all the modern M B based upfitted vans!

Yes! Please do start a thread on your 28'! I have a 1982 28' Airstream and I'm always interested in what other 28' look like!
