350LE engine rebuild start-up

Thought is would be fun to share this clip of my ex 454 (now 468) Chevrolet start-up after it's rebuild, new naughty cam and Doug Thorley headers were fitted still missing the Spintech XL muffler to quieten things down. Small radiator in front is the newly installed engine oilcooler. At some point,I will make available the costing of this exercise so as to compare with a 502 install or diesel conversion, both of which were considered. More pics shortly.

Very nice!!! What cam did you install?

I'm guessing the non exhaust sounds in the back ground were coming from work being performed elsewhere else in the shop.

Also, what starter did you install? The engine sure seemed to spin fast when you were starting it.

The cam is Crane 134112 high torque RV and the starter is an "off the shelf" mini-starter (to save a few pounds of weight) from eBay reference...works just fine.

No, all the sounds you hear is the engine at idle and then "blipped". Note that at this time, exhaust is straight-out to the Doug Thorney header stack recorded by the limited smart phone microphone which explains the "crackle". Hope to have the Spintech muffler installed next week.

Chris, it sounds like the cam is very similar to the Comp Cams cam that I installed in my Argosy 454. Looking forward to hearing how it sounds with the exhaust system installed.

I might have to order one of those starters.

Thanks!

Brad

The condition of the body caught my eye! Are the decals/paint on the body and around the windshield and front cockpit windows original?

Looks new in the video!

Original maybe

The mat black and maroon striping were refreshed by the PO otherwise bodywork is original as far as I can tell. Thanks for the compliment anyway. Here's another pic.

I have a 1988 325. Interior is in excellent shape and it runs great. Just took it to Austin TX from Albuquerque NM. But the paint or decals need to be renewed. Especially the gray mask that goes around the windshield and goes back around the side cockpit windows. On a 1988, the gray mask doesn't extend back past the cockpit windows, like it does on your 1991. Can you provide any advice on the best way to restore this area of my 325? Is there someone who can create a decal for the front or is the gray painted on?

I'm gonna use rattle cans of Dupli-Color BGM0534 on mine. I just plan to mask off everything else in the area, sand lightly, and start spraying.

I've got the original colour codes from DuPont for the grey/maroon and grey/blue colour schemes if anyone is interested. I think the grey was used on the front grills on earlier coaches as well. DuPont may have stopped the original, but had a near identical product. There are quite a few threads on the site about colour matching the grey. PM me if interested

Apologies chaps!

Not sure what to make of the sound playback problem. When I play the video from the Forum linked video on my windows 10 PC it works fine...the sound and video were recorded on my Android LG phone..have no idea what the format is. I'll try to make a MP4 version with my Canon Vixia HF100 now that the muffler has been installed.
I'm confused with this discussion re paint colors. Is the BGM0534 a black or grey paint?
Also would love to get the DuPont numbers for the grey/maroon paints as I would like to tough-up some of my paint work which at some point was a respray with maroon, silver and mat black used.

It's dark gray, maybe a match to the trim on the later model classic motorhomes. I got it by shopping for a different color number that was posted on another thread, and this one came up as a replacement match.

The DuPont colour codes can be found here:

https://www.airstream.com/wp-content...c78db5c5de.pdf

The DuPont centari grey is (to the best of my knowledge) no longer available, but people have found a close match - google the site and you'll find some useful info.

I am pretty sure that my 1991 manual (which I don't have access to right now) has the dupont colour codes for maroon/grey and the blue/grey options for 1989-1993.

all the best
Nick

The 'rattle cans' didn't do well on the plastic part of the gray under color on my 'Silver Bullet'.
