Here's my experience with Double Coin:

We bought our coach sight unseen, with the agreement that it would have a new set of tires. It came to us with a new set of Double Coin 8R 19.5's. We have driven it about 20,000 miles in seven years, and still have four of those tires on the rear axle without having had any issues. The front tires started to show some wear on the edges after about 15,000 miles, more due I am sure to worn front end components than a fault with the tires, so I replaced them.

I had not heard of the brand before we bought the coach, but they have served us well so far.

Unfortunately my luck with Double Coin tires was just the opposite of Steve's.

Had a set of six 8R19.5 tires mounted on our 310 and driving from the shop to my place on the interestate revealed constant vibrations at just about any speed. Took it back to the shop and they rebalanced the tires with the same result. Took the 310 to a different truck shop that balances tires while spinning them on the front axles. They reported back that all six tires were out of round.

We got a refund for the six Double Coin tires and bought Hankook tires from a different dealer. Problem solved. This was back in 2007 so maybe their quality control has gotten better over the years.

YMMV

It's here!

Got my Airstream today, late this afternoon. As this is my first, it's going to be quite a bit of exploration. First off, is a round of service, oil change, fuel filter change, Tag Axle clean and repack, new air filter, LP tank purge, rear suspension air drain and ....?

On the list to get is:

dry graphite
parafifin
light house hold oil
petroleum jelly
kool sealer

Any suggestions on what else I should do? It's been basically sitting in storage for the last 6-7 years.

It's a 325 1988 Airstream MH.

Thanks.

Robert

Getting a line of credit wouldn't be a bad thing to help you get started....

Congrats on bringing it home today!

Congrats on your new rig, lot to learn. And you in good company here.
We are blessed to have some experienced owners here willing to share their knowledge with us here.

I'd go thru the brakes, change brake fluid, check flex lines to the wheels.

Change out the trans and rear end oils. Take a good look at the date stamp on the tires, they are probably old enough to be a risk.

No doubt more will come to light as you use your coach.
But do focus on the driving and stopping gear first.

Have fun and keep us posted.

Cheers Richard

Took my new AS out for a ride

Well, after some help with AAA on the battery, took my new Scotty out for a ride to a service center to get all fluids replaced. The battery issue was caused by leaving the overhead door light on all night. It's a lot of switches to learn.

And the Cab A/C does not work. Here's goes the money out. Given the age what 's a good replacement vs fix?

And anyone know of good parts suppliers? I've already seen a few things I want/need to replace on the interior and exterior but am having not much luck in finding replacement parts.

I want to get a two new mirrors, full replacement for driver side, shell for passenger.

In the kitchen one of the drawers is missing it's front. And the spice rack rolling door is broken.

The original radio is gone, looks like there have been two different stereo's in this guy. Looking to add a in dash radio. Original speakers are still there.

A few exterior lights, other small pieces could be replaced. I do plan to get this cherry as good as possible without taking out a HE loan

And I have yet to figure out how or if the backup camera works - it's original - but the instructions on how to use it are in something called a owners packet. I don't have that. Any got that? Or knows how to turn this thing on? When "on" - no image - I see a list of feet on the screen in white letters, but nothing else.

If it is working it should come on when shifting into reverse, or at any time with an on off switch on the bottom left corner of the monitor.

I like to have it on when I have to drive thru large cities, to watch if the impatient commuters trying to cut thru right behind my coach are going to miss my toad.

These are OLD SCHOOL tube units and take a few moments to warm up and have a picture.

Cheers Richard

Thanks Richard,

I think mine is non functional, and I do not see any switch in the lower left corner. There is a little square, perhaps pressure switch toward the bottom left, and a push in, push out button next to it, but that's it. As noted before all I've ever seen is ft markers in white on the screen but no image.

So, I guess the best solution is to replace it with a new color LCD and camera system. Anyone got one they would recommend?

Little utility lights

The little utility lights in most of the exterior compartments, steps, etc. are mostly not working. I would expect the bulbs to be shot. I was in a auto parts store today and they only had a full replacement, no bulbs. Is that it? For these you need to replace the entire thing?

based on what I've seen on the internet, the answer to the little comfort lights is yes, you need to replace the entire housing, no bulb replacement.
