oldest Bambi

Well I just found out that my 61 Bambi needs a new axle and that the earlier ones had the axle welded to the frame...SO I have to cut it off and fabricate a new mounting plate for a new axle. Also interested to find out if my inner upper shell ends are made of aluminum or fiberglass. Rear bumper is basic angle iron type that is part of frame extension.

1631 has fiberglass upper shell ends. We don't know when CA started doing that
or when they stopped. No rivets showing there.
The new axle will certainly set the trailer higher. We are still dealing with the
proper steps for use at the door.

1601 too

My Ca Bambi, 1601, also has the fiberglass shell on upper ends. Are there any that do not? Was it an Ohio thing for Aluminum?

Hi Ewemama, thanks for asking. I gave up on getting the "Blinding Shine" look. Just too much time. I made it through the 1st couple steps (many weekends and $200 in polish, couple Harbor Freight polishers to boot) and decided it looks good enough for me and I still get lots of compliments, plus too many people knocking on my door at home wanting to know if it's 4sale. Many people try to play you, "hey you want to sell that old trailer"? I know some of them know exactly what it is. Had people offer 10 grand "right now". We Bambi owners are a lucky bunch and envied by all!
All I've really done is replace some floor rot so I could install a new toilet along with plumbing for the dump and all. Reupholstered everything and have been using it. Decided I didn't want to get too anal , just use it. Made a couple trips to Trinity Mts in N.Cal (1000 mile RT and heading to Big Sur Next week for a couple days. Kinda of lucky living 1/2 from the coast. We pull it over to the beach and enjoy it for the day.
It really pulls nice behind a older Yukon but may think about changing the axel and wheel size in the future. Original axel worries me a little and everybody encourages doing it. I pull and grease the bearings before every use just to be on the safe side.
Nice hearing from you and great to see some postings about the Bambis.
As far as the ser.# people are concerned with, read Andy's explanation. He lays it out there with the correct info.

Question new axle

I too am replacing my axle which requires 5 stud wheels and tires and not my 14" 4 studs...so have been told to go back to 13" wheels for the look. 14"s do not seem too bad and want the best tires, so are 13" tires just as good as 14"? want radials so I assume white walls are out. Know all about the need for trailer specific tires and not auto tires...just a size dilemma...

toilet seat issues

Also an issue with toilet replacement I encountered. I bought a good porcelain Thetford toilet and it is so close to back/side wall when installed that the seat hits the wall curve and will not stay up. Was thinking of a wooden seat and cutting out a portion of the lid to see if it fits. Anyone have this issue and found a more elegant solution? I think I ordered the tall version and that puts it at right height but I am still young enough not to need help to get up if the shorter version would solve the problem.

BFK,
I re palced the floor our '61 it is quite a task. There was no inspection panel on the Babmi. I was lead to believe that one existed, wrong. The pig tail comes right up through the frame center left and just right of the a-frame. It was protected by cardboard tube.
The previous owner had installed a cable connection near the shore pwr connection and a round TV antenna on the roof. All of the cables came through the right upper cabnet.

When I re wired the pigtail, I did allow for an inspection plate however, it is located behind the new fresh water tank, hope I never need to go there.

One other thought about the door handles, lubricate lubricate lubricate. I am still useing the original door handle and lock.
This is the other half of EWEMAMA
