I bought and am redoing what appears to be a 1964 Bambi made in California. I don't think it is a Bambi II because the logo plate does not include the II. The Serial stamp plate shows 41 6403 S 1141 Santa Fe Springs, CA (Under it is a California plate showing compliance with CA regulations which is stamped M-4 S-1141 3992 DOH# A 88909)
Can someone answer whether this is indeed a Bambi or is a Bambi II?
BothBobs: Your trailer is a 1964 Bambi II per the serial number. I think the "6403" in the serial number indicates your trailer was built in March, 1964. Maybe the "II" broke off the trailer just after Bambi; look closely for holes, filled holes or pop rivets where the holes should be. It seems awfully late in production not to have had the "II" when it left the factory. The rest of the serial number falls within 1964 Calif. Bambi II production, with the sequential numbers likely starting at 1001. Yours looks to be the 141th '64 B-II made in Calif.

I just purchased the above #63 California-built Bambi today. I have some questions, such as: How do I convert from the unusual 12volt battery system which has a compartment on front of the rig to a larger battery using the same existing four-pronged cord feeding the lights and water pumb inside?
Also, are there any diagrams or other intormation about the plumbing and electrical system avilable. This trailer was a one owner and in the Phoenix area the entire time. Thanks Lee Addis herethere@wildapache.net
Lee, first congrats on your "new" Bambi! They are cool little guys! I had a '61 Ohio Bambi for several years. I'm not entirely sure what you're asking... perhaps a photo of what your existing battery setup looks like might help clarify it. The battery in my Bambi was in the front streetside corner under the front couch. It shouldn't be a problem merely to replace your 12v battery with a larger 12v deep cycle RV battery; if the battery won't fit through the battery compartment door, you can replace it by removing the couch cushion and supporting plywood top. There shouldn't be any wiring changes required, and I'm not sure what the 'four-pronged cord' is, exactly. The only thing I can think of from your description is that perhaps you have an exterior mounted tractor battery box?

My Bambi has a similar number S1859.....Mines younger but from the same place. Having read all the threads not entiley sure what that makes mine but I know she is a 1963 from California now being given some TLC which is much in need. Mary
Well I have to thank you for this information. I just looked at my 1963 bambi serial number, and as it turns out my Mambi is the LAST one that was produced in California. It is number 316 of 316. Very exciting. Thanks for the insight :-)
Don't want to muddy the water, but just for info, the number on my Bambi is 163T103.
This would seem to indicate the last 3 numbers were the sequential numbers for trailers built in Ohio in '63, vs. a cumulative number for all three years.
On my blog, I'm saying there were only 498 Bambis built in both Ohio and CA between '61 and '63, based on an earlier post in this thread. Hope this is factual. If not, please provide the total number, if you can verify it.
If you see any errors in the post at the link, pls. correct me, as I'm new to all this, even though I've owned a Bambi for 27 years. The light just came on. ;-)
Perhaps we should create a sub-group of owners of '61-63 Bambis (assuming there's not already one), since we have even more in common than the larger Airstream community.
We hava 1961 Bambi Ser. No. 16TDSS1631. We are the third owners and have a book full of history on the unit. I am currently working on replacing the floor under the shower and kitchen. Which is pretty much all of the floor in the area. I have reworked the dump valve and will be finishing that up once the floor and shower area is re installed.
