Where? Or how? To straighten tag axle on 345 MH?

The wheels on my '88 345 tag axle are slanting in at the top and the Airstream factory no longer has the equipment to do the job. I live in Michigan but will travel to have the work done. I have been told that these tag axle need special knowledge that many frame shops wouldn't have.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone ever heard of this job being done or had it done themselves and maybe could give me their experience? I think at one time my rig was run without the rear airbags inflated. Mr. D.

Under inflated tag axle air bags, should not have caused any problems.

Over inflated, indeed, will cause a problem.

The tag axles, can easily be aligned, if someone knows how to do it, since they are really a trailer axle as well, except with special brackets that handle the air bags.

Please take absolute care of that tag axle, as there is but one new one left in the USA, that we bought sometime ago.

Present feedback is that Axis will not build any for the forseeable future.

Also, the drawings for the special tag axle drums, are gone, and there is none to be found.

We are looking for a decent one from a salvaged motorhome, to possibly have more created, but so far, we have not found one. But again, Axis has no desire to manufacture that special drum.

So caution to all those that have a tag axle.

TAKE CARE OF IT WITH THE UTMOST OF DILIGENCE.

My '90 has the airbags on the drive axle, so a loss in air pressure Would put most of the weight on the tag axle For that type of alignment try someplace like Harold's frame shop (248-3497550) in Novi Mi. they've been doing that kind of work forever. Mark

CORRECTION.....CORRECTION

The air bags are a part of the driver axle.

Therefore if the pressure drops below normal, excessive weight will be applied to the tag axle. That, in itself will ruin the tag axle.

There is but "one" P-30 chassis tag axle available,

And sadly, there are zero P-30 chassis tag axle drums available, and latest information is, no one wants to build any.

Anyone know where we can purchase the drum from a salvaged unit?

A big rig shop that specializes in alignments should be able to take care of you. They need to be capable of making camber bends on an axle, not all alignment shop can do that so you will probably need to ask when you make an appointment.

As long as the chassis is a P-30, then yes, the tag axle is exactly the same.

Hello Andy. I have a complete 1989 Landyacht, 36' P30. Chassis and tag is complete. Interior is gutted. has 22,000 miles when the 454 overheated. I'd love sell it complete, or? I left you a message at Inland with my number. Thanks!

to ( cold bend ), tune the axle

You will need 2 , 12 to 20 ton Bottle jacks
and 2 good nylon strap s come along s.
or 2 light 6 ft. chains
a couple of 2X12 by 10 s and a 6 ft. 2X6

Umm, I'd rather see them pay the good folks that do those kind of things every day than advise that. Where I work we have an enclosed pit, plus lots of safety equipment, and it is still very dangerous for the techs when they bend axles or frames. Not worth the risk to save a couple hundred bucks, in my opinion.

for some it is another day down on the Farm or in the Shop

this is Not a complex nor complicated Job. If one is of the Correct state of Mind.
