Voltage regulator

It is internal in the alternator. Once you get the dog house off, it is pretty easy to replace.

Voltage regulator

Ok thanks. I guess my problem is when i first start it up the volt gauge stays neut and after a few mintues it goes up. I do know it puts out 14volts because i have checked it at both posts. If i turn the running lights on and or head lights it drops off in a few seconds and i hear a squelling sound. Turn em off it goes right back up and the noise goes away. This also happens when i turn on the heater blower. I have heard that when you put load on the alternator it gets hearder to turn that is why i think it could be the belt. I have replaced it and it seems tight but just don't know about the squelling noise.

The squeeling noise is the belt. If all the rest of the issues have been corrected then you must check the belt. I am assuming it is not serpetine style so. First look at how it set in grove of pulley and how it rides on it. The belt should not be so far into pulley groove that sides are over top of it. That meens the belt is the wrong size diameter. The belt should set into the pulley but be a hair over top of sides. That or proper belt tension cause pulley squeel. Also look for cracks on inside belt surface. I am sure you can google belt and pulley position and probably find a diagram or they will tell you at a better autoparts store Not like Autozone. I recomend NAPA or equivalent

Alternator

Well after looking some more i noticed the wire going from the alternator to the selnoid is only 14ga. I did install a new 135amp. After reading about this i beleive i need to up the wire size. What size - and is there any other wires that i should upgrade? I sure hopes this helps.

Thanks for the help. John

Your kind of describeing a bad battery (volts but no amps) or maybe a bad ground. Your chargeing system charges the battery, your battery is what powers everything. If your battery or batteries are week then you will burn up altornators or overwork them which between a bad belt would cause the belt slppage (squeel) 14 ga should be fine if it is stock. That wire only engages the selenoid. the big battery cable is where the power comes from.

I'd say to go larger with the wire size.

I recommend no less than 10ga, (I like 8ga) from alt output to the batt or batt-isolator.

If your goin thru the trouble, why skimp? wire is cheap.
a good place to get termination ends is Napa, west marine, cabella's, gander mountain.

The volts staying low for a couple of minutes and squealing are both indicative of a loose alternator belt. The volts will be low because the belt is slipping, and the alternator is not turning fast enough to keep the volts up. Try replacing the belt (replace all of them as cheap insurance) and check it again.

save the old belts for emergency spares, at least they're light!

Here is a good way to tell if the wire is to small. Run it, if it gets hot= to small. I am assuming this wire is stock equipment. Your initial concern is indicative of a lazy regulator, and a loose belt, or wrong size belt, pretty simple. If that wire going to the selenoid had any amperes going threw it, you would within a second of cranking have smike and a burning wire. I repeted overlander but didnt meen to. I agree with him ( edited)

Alternator

Thanks to all. I did figure it out. It was the belt but not the alternator belt. It was the belt that went around the air, water pump, and power steering unit. That belt turns the water pump. The belt that goes to the alternator also goes to the waterpump.Guess i was so tunnel visioned on the alternator i didn't even think to look at the others which i had just replaced. I did learn something - that there is a sequence when you tighten the belts. You must tighten the belt that goes around the crank to the power steering unit first. Again thanks to all. Hope you all have a great holiday weekend. John
