Tranny for Isuzu

Can you please tell me what Transmission is used with a 1981 Airstream 28 ft. excella Diesel? Is it the Aisu Japanese unit? How many speeds? O.D.? Anything else I need to know about that engine/trannie combo? I am going to look at a used one this week.

Very good question, who made my transmission. I remember hearing the mechanic say it was an Allison but I would not stake the farm on that. It is a three speed there is no overdrive. I am very satisfied with the Isuzu Diesel, there is plenty of torque and power. This is probably the best power plant for these motor homes. What I like the best is that it is able to maintain a steady speed regardless of inclines. Maintenance is more reasonable than a gas engine seeing that you have no tune ups and an oil change last 10,000 miles. These engines are designed to run for many more miles than we will ever put on our motor homes.

Mine has an allison transmission but it is not the original one. It was replaced with the allsion several years ago. My motorhome is getting a new water pump as we speak, but when it returns home, I will be glad to look at the original documenatation and let you know what the original transmission was if you are interested. My motorhome is 1982 but the engine is 1981.

Our 1985 345 is an Allison 3-speed. They are a common transmission used with the Isuzu Diesel. Most of the little delivery trucks made by Isuzu use them. Here in the mid west I can buy a re-built from Catco if I need one. They are that common.
