Starter advice

My starter solenoid has given up the ghost. I'm over in England so will just replace the solenoid for now. However, this has highlighted the sensible advice to carry a spare starter. Does anyone have any advice on makes/models? I have a 1991 classic 250.

Many thanks
Nick

I've had good luck with replacing the stock starter with a later model Corvette starter. It is a reduction gear model, so it has more torque, and is smaller, so it is further away from the exhaust manifold. You would need new starter mounting bolts for this, as the head of the starter is not as tall as the original.

Heat is the biggest killer of starters. Make sure you have a good heat shield between the starter and exhaust.
