speedometer problems

well installed new speedo and new cable to xmission. the speedo works but it is shaking or viberating like crazy. i used white grease to lube the cable and i was told nota graphite is the only way. loaded the cable with graphite and the damping slowed quite a bit . but it is still doing the shake rattle and roll. added the cruise sensor and the movement increased. went back to the zone and they say give it some time it will go away.. any one kicked this beast ??? how did you clear the viberation???
lol

You sure it's not a Ford?

Had the same symptoms with an '82 Ford medium duty truck I owned since new.

The plastic drive gears in the trany sheared at 130,000 miles and 10 years.

Never personally been inside a Chevy transmission.

mr no wrench relates stick a screw driver in the hole on the side of the xmission and see if it turns . if it turns you got bad gears if it doesnt probably not. he suggest i check the length of the chain the inside if the speedo cable to see if it might be too long since i bought the cable from auto zone. well i cut a inch off the bottom end and that improver the fluctiuations of the speedo . but at 65 to 85 mph it works as it should. ??? i dont know. some one mentioned a electronic speedo . if this doesnt clear i might go back and read the old mail. in alabam you got to have a speedo or you will be suppoting all the little towns with two cops and a jp. could get expensive.

Electronic speedo's

Electronic Speedometers are relatively cheap and inexpensive to install.

Check out vdo or whitney catalogs. Some aftermarket speed controls will output to an electronic readout utiliizing the speed sensing magnets.

The cruise control is sold under the Audivox name and should be available at an Autozone. They may have to special order it, and it should be in the $129.00 range. The box will have hoses, chain to connect to the throttle and a bunch of plates to make it work. The instructions are pretty good. I used the tach feed and mounted the provided magnets on the driveshaft.

The switches are mounted on the dash in a 1X1.5 inch blister that is illuminated at night.

On the speedo issue I will have to look in some of my bookmarks, but on Sunday on the way back From Mystic Springs Fred Hinds and I were running down I-10 and I was checking my speed against my GPS....................

There are lagre format ones available and then you would have navigation aids as well.

I found it!

They are near daytona and make replacement gauges and custom rod gauges as well.

http://www.dolphingauges.com/progauges.htm

They have a line of mechanical gauges and a line of electronic ones too. I have not used them yet, but they are who I may go with when I tackle the dash job.

i also received a jc whitney today and it has a electronice speedofo a about half the price but not a lot of specifics . i hope the cable and chain burns in this weekend . auto zone assures me that is what it needs. time will tell. lol
