Don't know about "the best", but we decided the smallest and easiest to use is the Tailgater.

When there's clearance, we just set the Tailgater on the ground, but have set it on top of the trailer. It's that light and portable.

You really can't go wrong with a domed unit by Winegard or King. Some are slimmer profiles like the Kingdome. On most the only difference between fixed and in-motion is an internal chip. If looks and clearance are REALLY important then I recommend the KvH TracVision A9. I have had one of those on my toad since they came out (Escalade and H2). I think they're about 5" tall and work in motion but they're definitely NOT cheap. I'd look for a refurbished model and save a few bucks. All of the above listed have versions for either Dish or DirecTV. I prefer DirecTV as they have motorhome accounts so you get network TV while traveling (though it's just as easy to use the crank-up antenna with a digital adapter for that...but I'm unaware what's on an Interstate). In the end the chose of subscribers comes down to budget and preference and everyone on here has their favorite and reasons why. But you know the saying...everyone has an opinion just like everyone has an .....

Happy trails.

Thank you for such an in-depth response. I've been looking at Winegard Road Trip. It sounds good, but then I see KVH for almost twice as much (both In-motion) and I wonder if Winegard works as well. Big difference in price, of course.

You are completely satisfied with operation and durability of Winegard?

Again, thanks. Bob

Just a thought,
Have you considered turning off your TV for the few days a year you are out camping?

Somehow this comes to mind:

I'm still waiting for for TV, radio, phone, and Internet all over one satellite link. I believe we are getting closer. I'm hoping to be able to extend my "camping" time by being able to work from the road.

I have mine (especially in my daily drivers) because time is money and even though on vacation I want to unplug as a CEO its impossible. I swear I will take a completely disconnected trip one day. But to answer your question there is ZERO difference between the Winegard Minimax, KvH TracVision, and KingDome in their quality. The only difference is size and price. The biggest difference is size.
However there is a HUGE difference when it does to the Winegard Trav'lr I have that as well on my AS and it can only be used stationary but unlike the others listed it is the only product that can get HDTV signals.

Sorry, but that is incorrect. The Dish Tailgater also gets HDTV.

I apologize for not prefacing that I have DirecTV so some dishes will have functions others don't in either service. I was told for HDTV I had to buy the Trav'Lr even though I already have a Roadtrip Minimax in-motion. I wasn't going to post because I can't confirm it...but multiple people have told me the Minimax CAN get HD even on DTV so hmmm. I have a tailgater for when my line of sight is blocked but if that can so HDTV I'm missing out. Ideas the AV geek in school so I usually know my way around pretty well but mobile sat has a learning curve for sure.
