Replacing Air Compressor?

Can anyone recommend a replacement air compressor for my 1984 Airstream 310 MoHo?

Requirements:
- We use this as my winter home so I need to be able to run in temperatures as low as -35C/-31F
- I would like to be able to put 100 lbs PSI in the tires
- No need to run air tools
- will be installing a Klein Air Horn

Many have used a Viair brand compressor. I use a Viair 450C because it is rated at 100% duty cycle at 100 psi.

Do you know if the Viairs will work in frigid temperatures?

Maybe a cylinder of Nitrogen might be an approach to dodge the issues of low temperature compressed air. Pat

I don't believe the cold will bother the compressor but the moisture in the air will freeze all the valves. You can add a little air brake antifreeze, methyl hydrate, to keep things freed up.

I'm also a Viair fan. They work well, are cost friendly and the newest model (480C) is a complete beast in a compact size. It's rated at 200psi and 100% duty cycle at 100psi. 50% duty cycle at 200psi.


As other's have said, most compressors will work at very lot temps but moisture is the real killer down stream. Compressors will produce heat and keep themselves worm while pumping. The problem is that the air will condense when it cools and that will create moisture in the system. You may want to consider an air dryer system immediately after the compressor to keep things dry. Think paint compressor system and you get the idea.



One other thing to consider. Make sure that your down stream components are rated for the pressure you want to achieve. Having a 200psi compressor that cuts off at 180psi is nice but not so nice if your air lines or reserve tank can't hold that kind of pressure. That includes the air bag lift valves as well since their input is at full tank pressure.

The 480c can shut down at any pressure within it's operating range. The compressor alone doesn't determine the final pressures. You need a pressure sensor and switch assembly along with a check valve besides just the compressor unit. Here a link to the Viair site:

Part number P/N 90113 would fit your need. 90psi on and 120psi off.


If the compressor doesn't come with one you'll probably also need a check valve at the compressor or holding tank inlet. Viair sells those as well:
