I was wondering if any one has had any problems with their rear stabilizer bar. I have a 1977 p-30 Argosy and have replaced the bushing and the bar does not extend the full length through the bushing. I don’t know if this is normal due to the fact that when I bought the RV the right rear air bag was bunched up and the stabilizer bar was out of the front brackets and tied up to the frame with rope. Could anyone tell me how to fix this? The bar only extends about half way through the bushing.
I’m still trying to find out what exactly happened to cause this. Would anyone happen to have a chassis repair manual with rear suspension diagrams for a p-30? I was thinking that the axle may have been knocked back but I can see that the axle is directly below the bumpers.
Hi Stantank, sorry to hear you're having problems with your motorhome. I have a 1977 Argosy 28 footer and I'm going to get you some pictures of my setup. I don't have any airbags in the rear of my Argo but I do have a big honkin' stabalizer bar. I think my setup is as original since the PO did a pretty good job of not "customizing" when he maintained things. Hopefully I'll have more info for you on the weekend.
Here are a few pictures I took of my rear suspension. The rear stabalizer bar extends about an inch and three quarters through the bushings. It's pretty grungy under there since I sprayed rustproofing around and my rear axle bushings weap a bit.
Man you have help me more than you know. I am now thinking that someone has cut the bar off about 3”. If I could figure out how to post my photos you could see what I’m talking about. The bar has torch marks indicating a cut on both ends. Should I have an extension welded on or look for a replacement
I assume that you are talking the Chevrolet P-30 chassis – very popular chassis for may years. Prior to axles I was an RV Engineering guy. I would look to ebay. If that fails – look for a front end totaled motor home that can be a donor.
Additionally – P-30 chassis manuals are available. I just sold a set on ebay (I know you didn’t want to hear that). They are out there. Happy hunting.
man that's weird....why would anyone cut off the ends? anyway lots of p-30s out there so lots of spare parts....naturally the junk yard would be a place to prowl....many now have online inventories.
my suggestion is get a stiffer aftermarket replacement and polyurethane bushings.....did this on mine and really helped the handling.....a small increase in diameter or moving to cromoly steel make a much stiffer bar.
very little lean on corners and exit ramps is amazing for a moho.
I was looking through my P30/32 service manual, and it shows two different types of sway bars. the first, and most common, is the type pictured above. The second has link pins, spacers, and washers on the end. It is possible the axle was replaced, and the "odd" pieces were torched off.
