Power steering powered wiper motor?

While poking around an old mid 70s Revcon Motorhome I noticed that the wiper motor was not the typical one I've seen on other Motorhomes including our Classic Motorhomes.

I had never heard of this arrangement before. Is it a dependable and reliable system? My guess is its probably a bit more expensive to install and I wonder how it would operate while turning and braking at the same time?

Just curious.

I hadn't thought about the wiping power that would be involved using the power steering hydraulics. Maybe I aught to go back and pull that wiper motor!

Hydraulic wipers

Hi, back in the early seventys Lincoln Mark III's had hydraulic wipers. They worked very well and had about 15 speeds. The only draw back that I found back then was the fact that on the inlet side of the wiper motor was a filter screen; Most people didn't know about the filter and when it got clogged up [very rare] the wipers and power steering would be weak.

Brad, did you follow the lines to the pump? I've seen wiper motors, especially on medium duty trucks, with vacuum-powered wipers.

Terry,

I followed the lines down to the lower left front area of the engine. The lines appeared to be high pressure lines that connected to the wiper motor. When I first saw the arrangement I thought it was a vacuum arrangement. But after looking closer at the high pressure lines and where they were routed I decided it was operated from the power steering pump.

After having vacuum wipers on my first car (1955 Olds Delta 88 Deluxe) I decided I never wanted to use vacuum wipers again, especially in the winter in Nebraska!

How was the speed adjusted from inside the car?!

There will be one high pressure line, and one return line, just like the power steering unit.

My 1972 Chevy "Snap-On" truck had power brakes that were powered in the same way.

Jim, do you know if that was a Hydroboost or Hydravac system? Not that it matters in this discussion, just curious.

Yes, I think it was a Hydroboost, but I can't tell you for sure. Too many miles under the wheels since then.

Just did a little search. Yes, it was a Hydro-boost. Worked just fine. They are used extensively on vehicles such as diesels which have no vacuum. My truck was gas, but I think it was used there as it could be placed sideways. The hood on that truck was very short.

My 1977 Lincoln Continental has the same system for the power brakes.

IIRC, your Continental also had something called "Anti-Skid" as an option. It was the first ABS system I am aware of, available from 1975-77 on higher-end models such as Grand Marquis, LTD Brougham, Town Car, and Continental.
Boy, we've dragged this thread way off topic, from power windshield wipers to ABS systems...

Terry,

You are somewhat correct, in that I believe that the "Anti-Skid" option was available only with rear disc brakes. Perhaps standard on the Marks, since I think that they had rear disc brakes. My Lincoln has drums on the rear.

Hi, on the dash board was an ordinary wiper knob that turned on the wipers; It had several detents in the switch and each detent was a diffferent speed.

Hi, Hydro boost and hydaulic wipers worked from the power steering pump pressure. On 462 Lincolns the pump was mounted to the timing cover and turned directly from the crank shaft
Hi, my Mac Tools truck in 1986 built on a GM P-30 chassis with a Grumman Olsen body had hydro boost power brakes, and it was also a gas engine.

Hi, the early Ford/Lincoln ABS system was called "Sure Track"; It had a control module under the dash and a second vacuum booster and master cylinder mounted, on the frame, under the A/C evaporator case.

Hi, looking at the picture, the main body of this wiper motor looks very much like a vacuum motor, but vacuum wipers only had one small vacuum hose connected to it instead of the two larger hydraulic hoses. Also the cable connection from the in-dash switch is the same set up for both type motors.

The 1966 T-bird had wipers operated with fluid from the power steering pump. I would guess that the '64 and '65 did also. The control was a lever that could be position anywhere from off to full on.

My 1965 Lincoln Continental had the same set up as your T-Bird. It was a fully variable speed control and very reliable..no leaks or mechanical problems during the time I had the car.
