While installing the Banks I noticed some impact damage on the compressor turbine. I got conflicting advice on the significance of the damage but it always bothered me. I found a good source for turbo parts and picked up a new cartridge for $186.
Between the banks exhaust housing/waste gate and the new cartridge, the only part reused is the compressor housing. I did a little port and polish work and have a new turbo. I would highly recommend a new cartridge with the Banks as disassembly of the old turbo will put at least $200 in the swear jar.
The impact damage was caused by the poor installation of the air cleaner and careless replacement of the filter element. Can't be done without completely removing the canister or dirt will probably fall into the inlet.
I relocated the air cleaner which eliminated 3 90 degree elbows and about 8 feet of scat tube.
It's now serviceable through the side air inlet an is a true cold air inlet. Before it was allowed to suck in a combination of fresh air and dusty hot air from the engine compartment. There are a couple disadvantages to having the engine in the rear dusty end on the coach.
With the air cleaner moved, I had room on the battery rack to relocate the coach batteries from the front compartment to the engine room next to the engine batteries. I think this was the original plan that was foiled be a change on plans with the air cleaner.
I fabricated a tray and hold down and installed a new set of batteries. The old, still serviceable, batteries are now running a trolling motor.
I relocated the battery isolator and eliminated about 20 feet of #4 and #6 cable. It also removed a bunch of high amperage, unfused, exposed terminals from the front storage compartment. The new system is fused in the engine compartment.
Just got back from a 30 day 3000 mile trip and the mods all worked great.
I'm getting better boost at 28-30 lbs. EGT is staying below 1100 degrees and I don't have to watch it as close. Coolant temp never got over 200. The only time I had to back off the speed limit was climbing the long grades on I-25 north of Cheyenne WY. It roared through the Black Hills like a big bird.
It ran strong and smooth! We did 75 all the was across I-80 into a good headwind and got 10.5 MPG. Got over 13 running 55 on the scenic routes. Did about 12 average on the trip running it hard.
