Oil analysis can be a valuable tool if performed regularly and properly. Consistancy in readings is what you watch for, so if you have a reading that varies and all other factors are the same, attention should be given that item. For instance, say silica suddenly goes up, look for a dirty air filter or compromised air intake.

Hi Bob- I never actually tried to fill the bypass filter on my BB but guessing by just looking at it I'd have to say if it doesn't hold two it must be close. It's an Amsoil and by far the largest spin on I've ever seen. I am sure about total capacity when adding everything together is 11 quarts, on mine. I think Amsoil has a website you could check out.

I always ran the large filter on our 95 454 Burb, more oil the better, actually it was an optional AC filter right from GM.

No such option on the 8.1 though, no room.
Must be a more effecient system, the 8.1 oil temp runs about 15d lower than the 7.4

Thumbs up Oil Filter Study

Hi Bob:
Hopefully GM put a better lower end in the newer engines along with an oil pump that will furnish better lubrication. GM made the 2 qt filter, and that is where I got the idea for the bigger filter several years ago.
