So far so good

We're stopped in Davis to shop and say Hi to my mother in law.

Tomorrow we'll head to Dunsmuir. Given the weather in Dunsmuir I don't want to arrive at night, I may have a 200 foot driveway full of snow.

As I said, started just fine this AM, but it WAS 50 degrees. We will see how it does in Dunsmuir.

We're home

We stayed in a casino parking lot last night. The Slug started just fine this morning (but it was 50 degrees out).

Just one last adventure on the trip home. It was raining pretty hard as we drove home. At one point I hit a pretty large hole full of water. Shortly after that, my oil pressure light came on and the oil pressure gauge flat lined. I took it out of gear and coasted off at a ramp. As we coasted off the light went off a few times and the needle on the gauge began to go up and down. By the time I stopped at the bottom of the ramp, the light and gauge were normal.

Drove home without further incident.

It's supposed to be in the 20's overnight, so tomorrow morning will be a definitive test of the 'coil' fix to the hard start problem.

Thanks for all your support. More later.

Guy

Dunsmuir Or Bust!!!!!

Yippi--your home. Coil????-Why did it have to be a Coil???

What a "shocking" ending to such an epic "classic" saga . Yes, two puns intended .

Hope their is not an epilogue to this story !!!

Bob of Bob and Molly

PS--About 109,000 miles on the old "slug" now Guy???

We're all just waiting to see your report tomorrow when starting in the 20s . Whatever happens, hopefully your difficulties and reporting them will help some of the rest of us down the road. Thanks for allowing us into your life for this. If it turns out to be coil, I'm going out and buy a spare even though I do have a Ford engine .

I had a coil fail outside of Birmingham once. I ended up walking about five miles to an AutoZone where I bought two coils. Stuck the spare in my "parts locker".

Was'nt much help in Dallas

Glad to see your home. Sorry the help I pointed you to in Dallas was not effective.
I had and old (really old) airplane once that would fart and die at the most inopportune times...airborne. No one could figure out the problem till an old timer (old as the Plane) said he thought it was a heat related problem that would open up with the heat of a running engine and then close back when cooled. Right he was. Who suggested the coil? How old?

30,000 miles since purchase

We bought the SS (Silver Slug) in June of 2004. It had a little less than 75,000 miles. Today it has 105,000 miles. It has stranded us twice - Once the day we bought it when the electronic module in the distributor failed. The PO helped me find someone to fix it and paid the 3 or 4 hundred dollar bill.

The other time was a few miles from home and turned out to be a short in the power wire to the rear fuel pump. We have had other problems, such as the coil, when it was giving signs of giving up so I had to find a mechanic pretty fast.

I'm not sure if the coil was replaced when I had it tuned up prior to this trip, if not I don't know how old it was.

The chevy dealer in San Bernardino found the problem, I think they diagnosed the problem by hooking it up to an engine analyser. By the time that I took it to them, it was missing anytime you accelerated under load, I imaging the analyser would have shown the weak spark very clearly.

Thanks for all the help and support, I'll report on how it starts in the morning.

Guy

Angry Well, it still won't start when it's in the 30s

Title says it all, low 30s overnight, tried to start it this AM. No Luck. I'm sure that I could get it started eventually if I had to. But since I'm at home. I'll just wait for it to warm up.

I don't remember whether you ever addressed this in your messages about your problem, but have you removed the air cleaner top, turned on the key, pressed the gas pedal to the floor, and looked to see if the choke flap is closing? This should happen at almost any temperature, but especially below, say, 40 degrees. I know you've had dozens of suggestions , and this is just one more, but sooner or later we've collectively got to figure this out .

Guy,
I agree with Tim (and Terry) check to make sure your choke is closing.
