MH Exhaust System

Concerning P30, gas, 454. Dual system, no H pipe, stock manifolds and one muffler is breaking at seam. The rest of system looks to be in good shape.

Existing exhaust has, instead of clamps, all pipe joints welded. Are welds recommended on MH systems or is this something the PO did?

I'm considering headers, but thats on the lower end of my to do list, and for now would like to just change the one muffler, using U clamps.

I realize most automobile systems are U clamped together but I'm curious as to how other MH's are set up, welds vrs. U clamps. How's yours??

All pipes welded is, to me, preferred and is the mark of superior workmanship.

Well I may have posted above before thinking it out. Today I took the MH to a local muffler shop and in just about 2hrs. they had a new muffler welded in place, added a needed hanger and I was on my way. I can even hear the radio again.

Does your exhaust have 2" all the way to daylight or just to the mufflers?

It has 2 1/2" pipes from manifolds then goes 3" in & out of mufflers and tail is 3" rest of the way.

I've heard a cross pipe is recommended for better mileage, etc. Any thoughts or opinions on that?

My 310 has a great dual system but no cross pipe. Should I get one installed?

I was talking to a muffler shop around my area which is pretty well known for great work, and was asking him the same thing and his answer was no. Not for the 454 carb'ed at least. I am gonna end up going with the dual flow 50's big blocks. They should last awhile I hope. My other muffler in a 2into1 now but some dummie put a clamp around it to hold a heat shield which made it rust out.
