The chromed screws in the door are not original.
I have found replacements in the specialty screw section at the big box hardware stores.
The screws should be flat headed, but have a tapered shank.
If the screws that go thru the door frame are loose, then the lock will not be held in place properly. This would lead to the trouble you describe.
